2,300 miles and I've burned 1/4 of a bottle of oil.

It's not my fault I keep getting tempted to take it to redline every now and then! When it burns oil, I am guessing that just means I need to take it to redline some more so it burns off the rest so I can add a quart sooner to fill it back up, right?

P.S. I followed the break in procedure.

That is much better than E60 M5, average is a quart every 2K miles.

Mine uses oil as well. I'm planning on getting the velcro'd bag so I can carry a spare quart in my trunk once I get back home.

Mine takes a quart every 10k miles.

Did you mean 2300 miles from the 1200 mile service, or does your odo show 2300 (i.e. only 1100 miles from your 1200 mile service)? If it's the latter, your car is burning too much oil.

This topic comes every year or so. Mine definitely burned through oil in the first 2 years, but has seems to have stopped. I have 2 back up bottles of oil that have been collecting dust for a while now...

I wouldn't characterize using a whole quart between 1200 and 2300 as "too much", especially if driven in a spirited manner. As soon as I reset the maintenance indicator after performing my 1200-mile service it's was like the beast had been unleashed in the car. MPG dropped from 18 to 16 because I was far too interested in nuking the throttle on the twisty farm roads between my house and work.

As the mileage accrues, if the car continued to consume oil at the same rate I'd be concerned, but when the engine is still this fresh it's just a minor inconvenience.

ODO showed 2,300 miles.

2009 here. Bought used at 22K, now at 31K, oil still full/100%.

Sure it is too much oil burning if you are going through a quart every 1100 miles. At the BMW recommended oil change interval (typically 15,000 miles), you would have lost over 13 quarts in between oil changes. If that's not excessive, I don't know what is.
