E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

Fuel Octane has nothing to do with a ticking sound in the rear of the car. Most likely its just your Catalytic Convertor heating up at startup and cooling down at shut off. If it concerns you have your dealer check it out. Cats are covered under the emissions warranty for 8 years, 80K miles.

I've heard of the ticking on a lot of cars after it's been turned off which is normal, but in most cases with the engine on I probably haven't heard it at start up, if you want to be safe bring it to a mechanic you trust.

It's sad that anyone would put anything but premium in a BMW. I, myself am very picky with gas, only Shell or Mobil premium, most of the time it's Shell as there aren't as many Mobils around. None of that BP, marathon, or Citgo crap.

This article is a good read on gasoline.

Be sure and read the paragraph (Insider's trick on gasoline additives.)

I see the authors point, but let's just use calcium or rust deposits as an example, if one 'cleaner' (fuel) works well to clean it, switching to another may or may not have a negative effect, I've seen plenty of cleaners that don't work as well as others, you switch back and forth and eventually the cleaner that didn't work as well will have left a lot of deposit build up which the regular cleaner won't be able to keep up and remove the now saturated deposits.

I've had no problems with Shell and Mobil, I use Mobil maybe once a month of not 2 months. And Shell mainly, my vehicle is now at 106k, no issues yet, brought it into my mechanic last year and he's impressed that a 2004 was so clean.

I'm not saying don't try it, but sticking to one company that I've used for so long works, and for a company like Shell, I believe they have certain critiques which must be met for their gas. At least having done a bit of research online in the past people have actually gone and tested the grade of gas at their local stations, randomly. BP definitely does not fall under top tier gas.
