This is what happens when you let the wife drive your car..

Hello all! My wife drove my 2000 323ci e46 for a few days while her car was in the shop, Now, When I move the shifter to the "M/S" mode the shifter pops back into "D". On the screen I can see "S D" and I can move up and down the gears manually but the second I take my hand off the shifter it goes right back into "D".

Any ideas? I searched the site and did a google search but I couldn't find anything .

I removed the boot/shifter and everything seems to be plugged in and nothing is loose.
The car drives fine, reverse works just fine, so.. I'm at a loss here.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

This may help you. Have you thoroughly checked for something dropped in there? It seems that coins ect. can find their way in there from the holder above. I suggest trying a strong vacuum with the crevice tool, as it may be something you can't see jammed in there. Move shifter while vacuuming. Here is what I found on the detents.

Thanks, I'll try looking again when I leave work, I checked but it wasn't thorough, I just kinda looked for loose cables and poked around a bit. I'm just hoping it isn't something serious.

I'll help you with your marriage. Stop blaming your wfe right now.
She may not have done anything more than be behind the wheel when this was just due.
Suppose this happened and you were driving; would you think it just that she blamed you?
Which is more important to you?

GoForthFast has made a valid and meaningful point though.
my first impression to OP's thread was also that the problem may not be caused by driver's error.

its perfectly fine for you to point out that it may not have been caused by driver error.... but to offer help on his marriage? way overboard.

Sound a little bitter here. Did you get a lot blamed on you by your hubby?

haha wth! how did this turn into marriage counseling? relax.. It was a joke.. I don't actually blame my wife, yes she may have taken it to work but I highly doubt her actions did anything to cause the issue, (That has now cleared on its own. )

I've been happily married for 13yrs now.. thanks though

You might have had something "crunchable" work it's way down in there and then disintegrate. Usually, it's a coin, and you have to fish it out before it damages anything.

Nice try, but "yes she may have taken it to work," kind of gives it away.
