i had one on my e36 , long time ago.. you have an auto right? my manual was in gear when i pressed the button once almost drove off into a smart car while i watched like a dumb ass pressing the button 20 ft away screaming STOP! STOP! STOP!.. O to be young again.. Anyways

tach signal should be an ecu wire tap.. i believe. don't believe you wanna tap behind the cluster.. coil on plug kinda rules out the coil/distributer tap like a inferior honda/ford system..

it is all DME controlled, based of CPS /CSPS..ect

Im sure some one knows much more, this should hopefully get the ball rolling..

I said coil on plug, so the coils are well, on the spark plugs.. In a row on top of the motor

I jst did a engine swap in my e30.. I believe in the harness it is the solid black wire. Atleast for the Motronic 1.3

your 535i should have the C101 Plug. your other option would be to tap into the pin on the diagnostic port, i forget which pin that is now
