Exclamation E34 Trans Program, HELP!!!!!

Hi, I bought my 95 525i about 3 months ago, and I love it. But I have a problem, the trans program message comes on, and as many of you know goes into limp mode. so sometimes i get out lock the door wait 30 secs get back in and it runs fine. doesnt shift hard at all or anything, so i took it to the dealer and they laughed at me and told me that they cant work on it and to take it to this place called Atlantic Autowerks and they put it on a machine and told me that the pressure regulator solenoid was bad, so i get one off a car in the junk yard (wasnt hard, indy wanted to charge me about 1000$) put it in my car, changed the transmission fluid, and it ran great, no trans mode for about 3 days then i turned it on and it went back into it. Im at wits end right about now, I love this car, but i need to fix it. Im a mechanic in the navy so i know my way around, but im lost. If anyone can give me any words of adivce it would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I have had it tested at Auto Electric, came back with nothing wrong.
I had the speed sensor replaced, and one of the transmission pins replaced.

Any adive would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Welcome to the Fest and thank you for your service.

As odd as it may sound, check your battery and charging system. I have seen multiple times when someone's alternator went bad slowly and they got the dreaded trans program error. It's worth at least checking it out.

Good luck with it and I hope you don't have to have it replaced.

I got my battery and alternator checked at advanced auto and they said everything was good, but ive noticed a new symptom, i have no reverse lights. I also just took the battery to be checked again and cleaned the terminals. It goes in and out of the trans program, i put the battery back in and and it worked fine, i took it around the block, shifted fine, got home, turned it off and back on and it was still fine. i was happy, went back in the house then got the idea to try it one more time. Back in trans program!!!! I dont know what to do at this point. ):

As to the reverse lights, check the wiring loom that runs along the hinge on the left side of the trunk. They are known to get frayed. I wouldn't think that would help with the trans program, but weirder things have happened.

Main relay. Get a new oem one. It is a "low hanging fruit" for trans errors. Cheap. Also good for the car's electrical systems generally.

DME box. Behind the front right shock tower. Please check the Bentley manual for the exact location, can't remember. But basically every relay that you see that should be new. There should be three, o2 sensor, fuel pump relay, main relay. Autohausaz has some good deals I think.

UPDATE: I went outside, took the relay off, it looks a little messed up. I flicked it a few times, put it back, turned on the car, no trans message. Shut it off and turned it back on twice, still no message, so i will buy it.

Check the relay's holder. The contacts may need cleaning. The wiring underneath may be loose. Pull the relay holder up carefully and look at it.

The problem is obviously related to the relay or the relay's connection.

Are your fluid levels ok when warm ?

If so, then you need to get that transmission scanned for error code. Upallnight, does BMW scanner give in depth info from the TCM ? If it does, then zoulf8, you need to spend around $50 to purchase some diagnostic tools and software from ebay that will scan your OBD1 E34. Great long term investment. Either that, or just drive into a transmission shop and pay for a quick scan. Will cost you the same. These might give you better codes.

Oh and do the stomp test on your car. Note all the codes, then clear all the codes, then restart the engine and see if the trans prog message reappears.

Check youtube for E34 stomp test demos, and google for error codes' descriptions. I saw it somewhere here in the archives too once.

How many miles on that tranny ?

I got the car tested before and a pressure regulator solenoid came up. I replaced it. The problem stopped for two days and strayed back up. The stomp test is only giving me 1444 which is no codes stored. And yes tranny fluid is good warm.

You are using the right tranny fluid ?

Everything looked ok when the valve body was taken out to replace the solenoid ?

No fresh leaks after that ? If you can crawls under or slide your video phone under somehow to check that, would be good.

Actually it sounds like you've covered all bases with the transmission. So I'm going to go back to the electrical side. Bad electricals have been shown to generate this message. Bad relays, corroded grounds, frayed wiring, damaged components, in that decreasing order of likelihood. All might need to be checked.

What do you think ? Have you found anything else useful about this trans prog in your research ?

I've been looking all around, my next thing is to replace the alternator. Even though it was tested good, I don't know how old it is. Or maybe even the battery. Even though it tested well because of the date on it :10/10 and the fact that after I let it sit at work and come out afterwards it goes into it. I'm at the point where I might go to the junk yard, pull a tranny brain and replace it. Any thoughts on that?

Zoulf, try this. Clean the contacts on the dme and tcm clamps and the pins on the ecus with a clean toothbrush dipped in electrical contact cleaner. Rubbing alcohol works too. Dont spray directly.

Remove both battery trrminals for half an hour. Key the ignition to 'run' meanwhile. Then remove and clean those contacts. Remove the key before reinstall the dme connectors and battery terminals.

This is a very long shot so it might not be worth your time. That said, long shots work more often on old cars than new. Up to you.

Here is a picture of the ebox. Notice that the wires on the harness on the right have been separated before. I just noticed it. Do you think that might have something to do with my problem?
