Thinking about a 2010 or 2011 328i

Hello ... new to the board. Not a BMW owner but thinking of it. Weighing the practical new 2013 Honda Accord or a '10 or '11 BMW. I've read enough to understand both sides of the argument, and even read another forum ripping anyone cross-shopping an Accord with a BMW. My plan is to test-drive both, and if I go BMW, go the CPO route. I've thought about a lease, but not comfortable with the cap on mileage. If I do go BMW, is budgeting $2,000 a year on maintenance about right? ... and one other question about the test drive: What should I be looking out for?

Both are good cars (no matter what some may say) and it mostly depends on which you find more important: bulletproof reliability or absolute driving fun.

$2,000 seems like a good amount to budget for incidentals. Try and get a copy of the service records if possible. And remember, those years have plenty coming off lease. If you don't feel comfortable pulling the trigger, wait a few weeks and there should be a whole new set to choose from.

I guess budgeting an extra 2k a year would beg the question: why not just take that money, divide by 12 and add to payment of a new one. Thoughts?

Yes, that's sound thinking ..... see if your mileage would fit with a lease on a new F30 or Honda for that matter.

That would remove the unreliability issues of the BMW and let you compare the true monthly cost differential.

....Ahaha.

Can't dispute that Hondas are nice (despite the fact I've had some transmission issues with them in the past). I would rather have the F30 however. More stylish.

New Accord sure is nice looking. V6 or forget it imo.

Before I took a 2011 328ix for a test drive back in Feb., I had never been in a BMW. After the test drive I could not get the smile off my face. I thought I would have to seek medical attention for this condition. The cure? Getting back in my 99 Ford Taurus for the drive home.

My wife and I test drove a lot of other cars after the 328 such as Avalon, Camry, Rav4, Ford Fusion, etc.

The end result: we bought the car 2 weeks ago.

This is what you have to watch out for on the test drive, nothing else will measure up.

I have a '10 328i sedan (South African built). Currently has 29,000 miles and it has been flawless. No issues whatsoever. If the one you buy has been serviced properly and maintained, you won't need $2000 annually. I previously had a '07 328i coupe for 53,000 miles and, again, no issues or failures. These are really good cars. I've been driving them for the last 20 years and could not be happier.

If you get a low mileage cpo, you won't have to budget much. Car is
Covered and maint. is included until 50 k miles.

I really don't think you will have to set aside 2K a year yet for a 10 or 11 model even if they are aren't in warranty anymore or a CPO'd. Now "maybe" 4-6 years from now but there is data now that the e90's are going well beyond 100-150K miles w/o major repair. Just try to find the least mileage one and a CPO if all possible and you're all set. Good luck on your search. BTW the 2011 is the last naturally aspirated inline 6, a very, very venerable engine IMO.

Thanks. Also now pondering just a new 320i. I do like a smaller vehicle. I liken it to being the Civics of BMW. I'll keep in mind your thoughts on the 2011.

I wish. I did a search, and saw only one in SoCal. I think if I were to get one, I'd have to wait three or four months.

If you're thinking 2013 Accord vs. 2010-11 BMW, you might want to check out the 2014 Buick Regal (Opel platform) and the Cadillac ATS, too.

Maybe I am missing something, but this is the first time I have seen someone having trouble finding a CPO 328i in Southern CA. Are you looking for an E91 with MT or something?

Cars.com - 2 min search, 394 CPO 328i's within 150 miles of 90001.

http://www.cars.com/for-sale/searchr...les&sf2Dir=ASC

and these are just the ones that BMW dealerships released to the open market, searching any BMW dealer's website will usually show more.

I also agree with Lufthansa, I don't think you'll find many 320i's unless you plan on putting one on a boat from Europe. Did you mean a new 128i?

The "only in SoCal" reference was tied to new 320i. Plenty of 328i CPOs. Tough to tell them apart.

What was your car-buying ...

experience like on the 2010? How many miles? Was it a CPO? Like someone said previously, there are literally hundreds on the market near me ... Picking and choosing is going to be difficult. Plus, Carfax is only "reported" stuff ... So it's hard to tell what you're getting. Did you have a good experience?

Loved my '11 E90 328i. Great car. Spinning that silky smooth I6 to redline was a lot of fun.

I had all but settled ...

on the 320i, but given the difficulty in securing, and listening to you guys, back on the 2011 328i hunt ... Have a week off in a couple of weeks. Ready to test drive!
