Navi/iDrive or not?

Just curious do you guys prefer to have the Navi/iDrive unit?

What do I lose if I opt out of it? ie Navi, music storage, iDrive customization?

It's nice to have as you're able to just scroll through and view all your options without having to fuss about with the speedometer screen.

Great to see your maintenance and various other options and have navigation in general (not a need for a lot of people).

What you get/lose depends a bit on the year and model you're looking at, so please share more info. The pre-2009 iDrive/Nav units (CCC) are different from the 2009+ units (CIC) with different capabilities.

Generally I think all the car info stuff is available from the non-iDrive "BC" interface, but not as detailed and (IMHO) not as easy to navigate.

For me, Nav/iDrive was a must-have when I was shopping for my E93. Is it the best in the world? Of course not, there are some great portable gps devices or you can use you phone or whatever. On the other hand there's much less worry of a broken window / stolen GPS.

It really boils down to your preferences. Some hate the "hump". I figure if I'm spending all that money on a car I'm not going to cheap out on a fairly important (to me) feature.

Yah I am looking for an 09-10 m sport 335i in alpine white no cold weather package, so it is pretty hard to find one that fits the bill.

So I was planning to widen my options by either going with or without the navi/idrive.

I am fine using my phone for gps, I had navi in my 04 m3 and it was super archaic. But just was wondering of all the extra goodies the iDrive could do.

The screen is large, easy to see, and is well integrated into the car.

I'd get it.

I highly recommend the 2009+ CIC iDrive units. The interface is much easier to use than the two lined non-iDrive radio head unit for controlling things like your iPod, phone, etc...

I love iDrive/Navi but the navigation component is fairly mediocre.

There are lots of folks here against it, concerned about having too many electric do-dads, feel it is distracting, don't like the second hump in the middle, don't believe it is worth the $, and feel it will be obsolete soon. So, search and you'll find that alternative view.

Personally, I enjoy the heck out of the system and am really glad I opted for it. Definitely adds to my enjoyment.

On a daily basis, I don't do anything with the iDrive that I can't do on my other one without. Sometimes the GPS is nice, but even then we still use the phone.

If you can find one WITH it, it'll be a nice addition due to the ease with which you can look at stuff on the car. It's also a great crowd pleaser as it really does add to the overall aesthetics of the car, especially when people go for a ride. Plus the 09+ iDrive is much nicer and faster.

Its not about what you can do without iDrive. It is about what you can do in an easier and more elegant way.

That said, there are lots of niceties (like the PCD graphic) that you can ONLY get with iDrive.

You post is refreshing though. Usually when people are dismissive of iDrive they simply haven't used it. Your take is informed!

I like the iDrive in our 2009 328ix a lot. Given the option, I'd go for it.

Why no cold weather package? It's a pretty cheap option, especially on the secondary market.

I just picked up an 11 M Sport 335 and one of my requirements was the iDrive system even though I wasn't familiar with it at all. It's been a few days since I purchased the car now and I'm really glad I didn't settle and go for a non-nav car.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, I appreciate it.

brace up - no cold weather package because I really have no use for heated seats in California and also the headlight washers are more of a pain to deal with than otherwise

Maybe your wife/girlfriend/significant other may appreciate a nice warm bum while you woo him/her/it with your top of the line motor vehicle?

....and you can always use a ski bag

I live in LA and ordered the bun warmers without the cold weather package (as a standalone option). I love them! I don't get cold easily, but use them as the world's most expensive heating pad. Great on a drive home when my back is tight from sitting in front of the computer.

Also, I like them for when I have passengers. I don't use heat much, because I get warm easily. So, on chilly nights, if a passenger complains of being cold, I just but on the seat warmers.

That said, its a frill and would have been something I could do without.

I have the older system in the 3 and the newer one in the 7. The newer iDrive in the 7 is definitely an improvement. The nav in the 335i is not the greatest but it gets me where I want to go. I have the BMW Concierge Service so I can call the Conceirge for directions and have it uploaded to the nav. I don't mind the second hump (I actually prefer it) and am glad I ordered iDrive with the car.

I prefer MS-DOS to Mac. So, I'd say iDrive is like DOS!
