BMW quells US 'range anxiety' with range extender in the i3

BMW i electric vehicles

US car drivers have, what BMWNA CEO Ludwig Willisch calls "range anxiety" about electric vehicles. Despite averaging 30 miles a day US consumers don't want to be faced with the prospect of being out of juice and stuck somewhere. We're know for our overindulgence, big homes, and big cars. It only makes sense that a car that doesn't have ability to excess would cause us anxiety.

!

The i3 range extender is a 650cc two cylinder borrowed from the BMW C650 scooter. The engine won't be coupled to the cars wheels, it instead will feed electricity to the cars batteries. In battery only mode the estimated range for the i3 is 80 to 100 miles, the range extender will add another 80 to 100 miles. As it is a range extender and not a hybrid it is not likely that an completely depleted i3 will be able to fire up the range extender and continue on.

The i3 goes on sale in Europe at the end of 2013 and is likely to go on sale in the US in early 2014. Stay tuned to more details as we get them.
