E39 to E53

I really want an X5 so Im seriously considering an 06 E53 which can be had for 18-19K it appears with around 50K miles. Other than SIB 11 08 03 why wouldnt I buy this SUV? I still see them every day here in CT. My daily commute from my house to work is 7 miles one way (no highway). Does this make me a potential victim to the dreaded CCV issue? Probably. Im looking at two from dealers and might try to tell them that this SIB needs to be addressed in the negotiations.

Im a bit weary of going V8 due to addl. maintenance on top of what already will be necessary maintenance. I still think they look great other than the back end which is starting to look a bit dated. I just need a larger 4 wheel drive vehicle and want to stick with BMW and dont want another E70 in my driveway.

This makes it tough.
The F25's are just about as big as the E53. Probably can't get one for 20K, but they are a refreshing look in the driveway sitting next to an E70.

The N62 engine is a headache.
I would watch out for good deals on F25's later this year, because the X4 is coming soon so people will be preparing themselves for those.

Dated

Its the rear talgate and lights...thats what looks old...from the front it still looks current to me.
As far as F25, the numbers wont be in the $20's for a few years.

06 4.4 or 06 3.0

I have a 2 deals in the works:

06 3.0 with 53K miles for $19K. Has new tires, new brakes and rotors and an oil change, new front control arms. All done by dealer to put the car up for sale. Silver with gray leather. Premium & Cold Weather Packages.

06 4.4 with 61K miles for $18,500 +/-. Tires have at least 1/2 there life left. New brake pads on Front. Rear pads w/in BMW specs. Premium, Cold Weather, Rear Climate, Navigation I think the only thing missing is sport package from this V8 beauty. Spent its pampered life in fairfield county, CT. It looks mint in the pictures. I asked for Inspection II to be included in deal. No response yet.

Im thinking I take my chance with the V8. I have a potential PPI lined up for the V8 also pending deal acceptance.

Thoughts?

There's nothing like a V8, but that N62 is just a pain to work with.
That inspection 2 would be a huge deal if good. I personally would go with the 3.0 because of the stories I hear about the N62 by itself.
CCV for the M54 is minor compared to what the 4.4i has to offer, but then I am a DIYer.

So based on the deals you have listed and adding one to the stable next to the E70, not worrying about maintenance, and taking off my hands on approach, I would go with the 4.4i. It's the cheaper option, nice packages, navigation is decent, it has some maintenance taken care of (you'll really see after PPI) and appears grandma used to drive it.
It will look sweet in the garage.

06 4.4i

They accepted my offer of $18,250, Inspection II being completed. Good Deal? This is a BMW dealer. I think I feel like gambling man. Have a good friend with an 06 4.4 and has done nothing but normal maintenance from 55K to 95K miles. Its a beauty. My wifey will be jealous about the power compared to the 3.0 E70.

Any problems with your X with cold weather in MA? I think I am going to get the gray on gray 3.0. They lowered to 18500 so Im going to offer 18000. NO WHERE near as nice as the black on tan 4.4 but I have enough stress in my life with an E70 in the driveway.

I have not had my 3.0 for too long; the owner of the shop i got my inspection sticker from had 2; one 02 w/ 190k+ and one 06 w/ 118k; the 02 looked clean and he said the only ccv issue he had was once; @ 170k other than that oil changes spark plugs brakes... 06 oil changes spark plugs brakes; claimed to have had both since new.
N62 with cooling pipe failures, carbon clogged secondary air ports on exhaust side of heads... Vanos issues, oil consumption, alternator bracket gasket leak. if its the same engine as the 7 theres no doubt in my mind it is more trouble than its worth; and i diyed everything on mine it just got sickening always fixing a leak for another to spring somewhere else. Not to mention bmw v8s run a thermostat of a blistering 105c so on some summer days they can run close to 118 if there is any problem in the cooling system, can even leak internally so the cooling tube leaks in the valley pan (which is supposed to be where the coolant exits the heads from cooling cylinder walls), causing a great loss in cooling efficiency. In the 7 forum there are alot of great threads pertaining to the n62 and its pitfalls.
All that being said, there is also a chance that it may not be so bad also, i am only speaking from my experience with my 745 with an n62b44; which was not a good experience. Previous owner maintenance records and etcetera may put your mind at ease if it was babied.

Previous Records

There really are no records between 20K and 60K miles. It was not serviced at a BMW dealer in that timeframe. It spent its life in Greenwich, CT and looks pampered. But it could be a guy who never serviced in that timeframe also. Outwardly appearences the car looks new and must have been garage kept. I had a PPI lined up from an indy BMW specialist today. Again, the dealership was also going to do inspection II in the deal which it needs.
I already sent an email to the CA backing out of the deal and to refund my deposit.

Im thinking I just go with the 3.0 with 53K miles that has had all the recent service done to it. I wish I never saw the black 4.4i.

You're still getting an awesome vehicle, so don't lose sleep over it. All V-8 X5's have frequent issues, even the new ones. The M62 in my X hasn't been too bad though. My biggest issue about the vehicle has been the transmission, but I LOVE the way it drives. In some ways I love it more than my other cars, and they all have been way more reliable.

I'm at 184,000 miles on this thing and hope to hang on to it for a little while longer.
There was a LOT of problems along the way, but the drive makes up for about 50% of the headache. That's probably why I still have it. There were definitely times I wanted to let it roll into the lake. Nothing like starting a road trip, and 50 minutes into the drive a check engine light comes on when you CHECKED the vehicle over and changed/topped off fluids a few days before setting off.

Dont really know them. Major BMW Center in Northwest New Jersey. From your link it appears I am getting a good deal considering that I am below KBB out the door. However, Im sure auction on this car is like $16K.

I meant KBB "The Trusted Resource"
Not many people like to use them.
I forgot that you'll be trading the E39, so you're good. Definitely a sweet deal.

Nada

I usually look at NADA as better representation of pricing than KBB.

There is an o-ring that goes on the reservoir. I replaced mine and the leak stopped, look to do that soon number 3 here.
Coolant leaked out expansion tank and dried up, not to worry there. Looks good.
Good luck.
