125 MPH on a road trip; open highway with no one around. Felt like 75 MPH.

Once, a VERY long time ago, I wanted to see if my (then) car would do 100. It was a flat, straight, almost empty road with freshly tilled farm fields on either side. I got it to 95 and was passed by this old, beat up, tail pipe dragging Taurus. It was that instant that I realized how STUPID I was being. That was when I vowed to go with traffic flow. I would much rather be late then not get there at all. If you want to go fast, do it at the track or some other place that it's legal. Don't do it on the public highways. Even if you can handle it, you can't control other people/situations. It just takes one idiot to not check their mirrors (or even if they do but misjudge your speed), to really screwup up everyone's day.

2012 528xi 120 mph on Autobahn very smooth. 140 on Autobahn w/E60 535xi was a little light in crosswind or would have gone faster. Both cars very stable at 110 for long stretches.

My oilburner will do 255 km/h on the speedometer.
So I drive it sometimes in Germany, when the autobahn allows it, at 160 MPH.

The car feels very stable at those speeds.
It is the not so fast moving objects on the bahn around you and the braking distance at this speed that deliver possible danger, not the BMW.

In my (now sold) E46 330i, I could (and did) travel at the maximum 250 kmh very often on German autobahnen, and it was perfectly stable (though a little loud). With my current F10, I touched 200 but the car is not stable enough (overly sensitive to cross-winds IMHO).

142 MPH on the autobahn... wanted to hit the 155 limiter but traffic started to pick up and had to pull back.

In the US I always keep it under 90 - its not worth the ticket or the hassle just to gain 3-4 minutes.

During each of my 4 EDs I made sure to hit the speed limiter. During our 550 ED, I spent hours cruising 130-140 mph which was enough time for Mrs D to get comfortable enough with the speed to doze off.

Stateside, my standard practice with the 550 at the dragstrip was to hit 120mph before I let off the gas. Unfortunately, I never got around to test the Dinan speed limiter delete.

My Five is garaged in the metropolis of the Northeast. I have pushed 90 with ease and the Five always wants to go faster, however, my concern over the consequences (see, e.g., quackbury's post) always makes me pull back. The concerns are real. I once represented a family who had a young family member who died as a result of a crash into a cement column.

Now we know! I had calculated 181mph for 6th gear at redline, so you got pretty close to the theoretical drivetrain max.

Mein Auto: A Car
Do not own a F10 but ill chime in.
The max speed i have done is 180 KMH which is around 112 MPH. (E60 530i 272PS)
That is a LOT considering where i live and the lack of proper highways.
To be honest i only did it once and i swear i wont do it again, even though it was a straight i had the feeling that a small mistake could cost me my life.

I lost my brother last year because he was speeding a bit (Probably 60MPH - 80MPH) and there was a very very very very slight bump/gradient . . . that was enough to send the car flying, roll a couple times and T-Bone a tree.

Some of us are fortunate enough to live near roads where it is perfectly safe if no cars are around. When I hit 130 in mine, I was on a road 1.5 miles from my house. three lanes in each direction with about a 200' wide median in the middle (with not one, but two drainage ditches). No cross roads, no business - nothing. I did it with no cars for at least a mile in front of me. The only person that could have been hurt was me or any crickets I didn't see crossing the road.

I hit the governor limited 130 on the autobahn. It was strange to keep pressing the gas and not haveing the car accelerate at that speed. I had around 30 minutes driving on the autobahn at 100 that was nice. My 550 is the non sport version.

I've only gone maybe 100mph so far in the F10, I do routinely hit my 85mph warning on some tasty offramps around my house though. The only place that I ever would feel safe doing a full blast in this car would be out on Hwy 58 by Barstow on the way to Las Vegas and only if nobody else was nearby. I have had my E46's maxed out at 128 mph or whatever out here a few times. Nowadays, you are risking a full on CHP pull over in force, rip you out of the car at gunpoint, beatdown, taze and arrest though, (and probably deservedly so).

My E46 can only hit 105mph on the front straight at Thunderhill (E92 M3's can hit 135mph easily) so I'd need a bigger track like Road America or something to maybe max it or the F10 out on a proper track.

There are a lot of two lane winding roads around here and we frequent them whenever we can. With that there are times we have to expedite when passing a slower moving vehicle on a short and legal straight section and often when I pull back into my lane I'm at 110 or 115. When I think about it I ask my wife to look because I try to stay focused on the road. I sure wish my car had heads up. That's the only thing it doesn't have that I wish it did.
At those speeds it's as stable as can be and I've never felt that I didn't have complete control. I usually start downshifting as soon as I pull back in just in case there's a black & white coming over a hill down the road.
