Clunking in rear

I am very hesitant to post this because I think it might be a bit premature...but I'm trying to figure it out to no avail.

While driving in town, over small bumps in the road, I keep hearing this slight clunking sounds from the rear...possibly trunk, rear seats...not sure. Everything seems secure, rear seats are locked down, truck has no play...nothing obvious as to what could cause the noise. It only happens in town, the car as as smooth as silk on the highway.
I never noticed this before with the loaner F30's I have had, but they were not Sport Line (if that makes a difference). Anyhow, if anyone has experienced this, please let me know.

I experienced this. In my case it was the secret compartment under the floor of the trunk. In it is a divider which had come loose and was lying sideways. Every time I hit a bump or made a sharp curve I'd hear this "thunk" which turned out to be this divider slamming against the plastic compartment which amplified the noise.

On the highway I wouldn't hear it because the music and airflow masked it. On rural roads, different story. There's a toolkit in the back too, sometimes the tools can get dislodged and create a "thunk".

That would make sense, however, I removed mine yesterday. I am thinking however, that it is isolated to the trunk area....somewhere.

Check for shipping blocks that were not removed - not sure if this would give the thumping sound going over bumps, but wouldn't hurt to look.

Have you bother to check in your trunk for any loose items?

if you think its in the trunk, fold down backseats and drive around, see if it helps pin point the noise

In the secret compartment over the right rear fender the in the BMW tool kit is a screwdriver and a wrench. Possibly they've become loose from their snap-in adapter.

I just checked it and the tool box looks secure, but the tow hook rattles around in there so I took the whole assembly out and when I drive to work tomorrow...we'll see.

I have exactly the same sound, 328, no-line, run-flats. It is not a rattle, but like you say a thump from the rear end and only on certain bumps around town. I have been unable to track it down. Had a friend, mechanic, ride with me and he thought it may just be some sound normally produced by some part of the suspension, especially with run-flats. Keep us informed.

I never heard it on any of the loaners I had ( which were no-lines).
Tool box removal did not help this morning. Next step is check the truck rail / hinges / brackets / supports. They seem clunky when in the open position. Hard to tell when closed.
Tonight I'll drive home with the rear seats down & see what I can hear.

I'm aware that this might just be a sound I'll have to live with, but I'm not going down without a fight.

So I've been trying to locate the origin of this clunking noise to no avail. Seems isolated to the passenger rear area...can't tell if it's inside or out. I was looking underneath the rear of the car a few minutes ago and I remember someone saying "check for the shipping blocks" possibly still being there. I'm not exactly sure what to look for so maybe someone can tell me what they look like or what I should be looking for.

I LOVE my car, but this clunking noise is so annoying....annoying hell, it makes me hate driving it!!

I recall hearing a story some years back about a rattling noise coming from a passenger door. Come to find out, it was some soda can or something that one of the factory workers had left inside the door panel. So, if your car was built on a Monday, one of the workers might have had too much of that good German beer and accidentally dropped a bolt or nut in the door panel?

Tell you what since its bothering you so much let someone drive your car while you sit in the back to find the source of this noise.

I've done everything I can think of to locate it. Please understand it's not a rattle or clank, it is a dull thud or clunk as I go over the sharp cracks or bumps in the road. Only comes from the rear and seems to be from the passenger side. Not a peep on smooth roads. Non Sport Line loaners did not make this noise so it's either that something is loose or it's just a symptom of the stiff suspension and hard tires.

I'd really like to hear from other F30 Sport Line drivers out there to see what they think.

Although your car is new, it is possible the rear strut maybe loose or damaged. I would recommend that you take it into the dealer, and have a tech take a ride with you. Have him sit in the back seat and see if he can identify the location of the clunking/noise.

Not calling OP's judgment into question, but in a closed environment, it's very tough to tell where a sound is coming from. Sound bounces around inside the enclosure and makes it very tough to locate. You do need another person in the car who can sit at various spots to try and pin down the location.

Edit: particularly true of low frequency sounds like thuds.

Bonjour,

I drive a 335xdrive 2013 and have the same problem. We are 10 Bm owners at the same dealer in Quebec city, Canada. They have written to BMW and no answer as of today. I noticed the clinking in Februery. Actuelly it makes me unhappy with my car and I am not confident that BMW will help in resolving the probem.Bad.

Clunking in rear

PILAC,
If you are referring to my original post then please keep me posted. If you are referring to BJ's former problem, just remove the piece.

Do you have Sport Line?

Hey guys, I had the same problem but I noticed something.. I check the tire pressure and do it the correct amount then after 2 days I keep hearing the sound intown over any bump. then I went to check I discovered that the tire pressure loose alot in 2 days anyway whenever I set the front 36 back 38 psi I don't hear anything but when it's around 32 psi I keep hearing the annoying sound my tire size are front 225/50 R17, rear 255/45 R17.. I put Nitrogen in the tires, try doing that and filling them around 35 psi I think the problem is from the run-flats :S

I know exactly the sound you are talking about. It sounds like it is coming from the rear passenger side. I have looked around & underneath and can not find any cause. Hopefully someone finds the cause.

Well, I'm going to the dealer Thursday morning to see what they can find...if anything. I fear that it's just a symptom of the hard run flats....but we'll see.

Is it a distinct thunk or is it more of a creak? A creak could be bushings in the suspension.

Not at all creaking. Very dull, hollow, thud like. Only on sharp bumps & cracks.
