E53 Wheel Bearing Replacement Questions

Good Afternoon All -

I recently bought a used 2006 BMW X5 3.0i which I've had some issues with since day 1 unfortunatly.

One issue is a wobbling noise that seems to come from the rear driver side. I went to a tire store and one of the guys drove it and agreed that it was probably the wheel bearing needed replacement. Their store replaced them - but not for BMWs.

I'm not an expert mechanic, but have replaced a couple of starters, belts, water pumps, and helped rebuild a 54 Chevy when in high school; but not too much with BMWs.. I looked up instructions for how to do it a found a couple of videos (below,) but nothing for my specific model, though. I do have a mechanical mind, though, and understand how things work.

1. Given my estimated level of repair knowledge, think there's be any problem with me doing it myself? I'd have to rent a couple of tools from AutoZone like a larger socket, but that shouldn't be an issue.

2. I unfortunatly don't have access to a lift, but do have a couple of stationary jacks I can prop it up with. How long do you estimate the process may take for an amateur?

3. For those who have done it before or do it frequently, any tips on things to look out for, tricks to use during the process (like hanging caliper from coat hanger made hook), or that I strange things I may possibly run into?

Any information you guys have would be helpful - Thanks Guys!

I the mechanical side is not that bad. If you have done work before just take your time and if you have access to a bentley manual that will help. The problem will be pressing the bearing in and out. While most of the rest of the car industry has gone to replacing entire hubs with the bearings in them, BMW still just changes the bearing. so getting to them is a little bit of work but not terrible, unless you have a hydralic press in your garage, you will have to find someone who will press them in and out for you. I would try a local NAPA, sometinmes they have little machine shops in the back. Good Luck
