exhaust to quiet

I recently got a 98 e39. I got the car very cheap as the motor had been over heated badly. I had a line on a S52 engine and so in it went. Car looks and drives absolutely great. My only issue is its way to quiet for me. I would like to drive into the carport and people sitting in the front room know I just drove in! I mean I sneak up on the dogs! Ok anyway it needs to make a little noise. I have been told that removing the muffler or "cans", the car has a very nice sound. What have you guys done? Will doing this make it obnoxious? Any input would be great and thanks
Johan

As Yogi Berra said, "You can learn a lot just by watching." In this case, use the Search function. There's LOTS of info on this subject here.

Oh, and the word you want is "too," not "to."

A lot of us cut off the resonator, put on magnaflow muffler and are happy with how it sounds. Look up sound clips on YouTube.

no one on here has an s52 so we cant tell you how it ill sound. but I will tell you this. if your car looks like a basic stock e39 and your exhaust is loud I think I would laugh I your car if I randomly saw you. I would make my car look like a nice fast car before making it sound like one. my m54 has a electronic cutout valve and at the flip of a switch I have a straight pipe from the cats down. its loud as hell and has an amazing tone. and man does it turn heads. but again man I wouldn't want a loud car if doesn't look like it should be loud...

Not wanting the car loud, want the car to just have a growl, I don't mind the sleeper idea either. The car does have a tune but not a lot else. I just don't like sneaking up on the dogs lol. Doesn't have to announce i'm in the neighborhood if you know what I mean.

If that's what you want. then buy a magnaflow 14816 muffler, cut off the old and put in the new. leave all your resonators and just cut off one thing weld another. I have that when my valve is closed. stock but the rear muffler is a magnaflow 14816. sounds deep and nice. just a little louder than a stock M5 if you have ever heard one.

Also you basically described EVERY Honda out there. The 530i is by no means fast, you can make it look "fast" and sound "fast" but in reality it is not and will be a rice car. Most of the new eco cars will **** on stock E39's throughout all the models but with a dead silent exhaust note.

No one said you have to race... They are not fast but atleast they are faster than v6 mustangs, camaros, challenger, and chargers...

+1 for mike. Mine sounds ridiculous but its because I did this whole turbo job so now theres a different exhaust. But when my 540 was stock I cut off the tanks and put a straight pipe on it and it sounded great. Perfect not too loud just a nice purr. The magnaflow on it now sounds good to I think its because of the turbo and all but im not sure. Mike nailed it though.

I just changed my exhaust from a dynomax turbo muffler to a flowmaster 40 single in / single out. resonators and silencers are deleted. Car is still extremely quiet. It has a slight growl on rev, but going down the road is whisper quiet.

I am not saying i want my car "loud" either but i want to know there is a V8 under the hood at all times (without the drone would be ideal)

I am guessing the magnaflows are louder then flowmasters... if its not raining ill do a video clip tonight.

I have a friend with a 12 mustang and I don't even wanna tell you how embarrassed he was when we raced. and another with a 13 charger, I don't even want to waste my time with that one because its slower than the Camaro.

I got a beef with the S52us it's not a ///m motor it's a normal m52 with a longer stroke.

I got one reason for all the nah Sayers.

No individual throttle bodies every S motor 1990+ has individual throttle bodies. The S52euro had them but not the S52us.

If you want a good sound. I will record my S62 with Dinan CAIs and dinan exhausts. I don't know what sounds better the engine or the exhaust. Plus under 4k Rpms it's very tame.
