Front seat retrofit

I just purchased front seats from 2000 e38. These are to be refitted to a 1997 but the plugs are different.

Does anyone have any knowledge of how I may be able to splice the new plug to my old harness.

And perhaps identify the use of each cable on both old and new plugs?

Amy help would be appreciated.

The best way tp approach retrofits is to obtain a copy of the WDS (wiring diagram) Unfortunately these have disappeared from the net recently, so you may have to go the ebay route.

Then you will be able to identify the plugs to your existing seats, the wire colours, and what components the wires link and so on... The wds shows the pre and post facelift so by studying both you should be able to work out the info you need.

My friend recently retrofit front seats from a 2001 into a 1997...but he got the "pigtail" from the donor vehicle. He spliced the pig tail by color code matching. When he was done he had two left over wires on the new connector ("pigtail"). But everything works including the memory. Don't know what the two additional wires in the 2001 are for???

My connector had 10 wires and the new one has 16. So far I believe I can ID the ten but I am not absolutely sure.

That's why you need the WDS. Further, a given wire may be present but in a different pin location. As for extra wires, remember seats have options too: Shoulder adjustment, heating, active seat, cooling

There's still an online WDS...its just not as easy to navigate...but with some patience and time...you can get the info you need: http://www.bmw-planet.com/diagrams/release/en/

And, I do believe there's still a DIY (w/pics) on www.e38.org

QS you are absolutely right. It is difficult to navigate. Anyhow I erred with the wiring because I was matching the new driver side pigtail (16 cables) with the passenger seat on my car (1997) the passenger side pigtail for the newer seat has 12 cables).

Correct me if I am wrong. The seat belt receiver for the post 99 will not work on the 1997, is the correct? If this is so does anyone know which cables are to connected?

I hope to be posting pics of the cables for each soon.

Thank everyone for your contribution.

Ok So here's an update. I am just done swapping the harness from the old seat(97) to the new(2000) it was almost a direct match excepting for 2 connectors which was different but I was able to swap out the pins and match the colors.
I found one connector that was not used in the both backrest. and one connect on the bench that also not used this one on the old seat. I hope to ID them at a later date.
Anyway all worked well and the car now has original connectors so no confusion in the future.
