Check Engine Soon - What could it be??

Hi,so when i was driving back from work yesterday my check engine soon light came on. And now I am scared what it could be? I have 2008 328i with like 45k miles.

I read a bunch of threads where it said that it could be the gas cap. I last filled up Sunday but the light only came on Tuesday. Could it still be the gas cap? I made sure that it was completely tightened yesterday after I read it on a thread but the light is still on. How long will it take to go away if its the gas cap?

Please help, I am scared to take it to the dealer cause i feel like they will hit me with a huge bill

Find a good independent mechanic to pull your codes.

Go to a PepBoys. They will read your code(s) for free.

Don't fear to drive the car. The CEL is always an indication of some kind of compromise with an emission control issue. There is an enormous number of possible causes, but it does not mean your car is going to experience a catastrophic failure if you continue to drive it.

If the CEL starts flashing he should pull over as soon as it is safe to do so. Flat bedding the car to the dealership at that point could be a big money saver.

Yes. A big bill is a bad thing.

But have you thought it through?

If you fix it now, larger issues may be avoided!

Best thing to do: Read codes. All codes, including BMW proprietary, shadow, and hidden. Bavarian Technic can help you there.

I've never heard this. What kind of failure would cause the light to flash?

Check engine light is 95% associated with emissions. Check your coolant and oil. If that is OK, take it in. Sometimes, it could just be the air filter, loose gas cap (doubtful), Carboned caked O2 sensors, bad gas, etc. If the car is not running rough or at high temp, you are probably ok. Misfires (bad plugs or coils) could also cause it. Nothing major. I've repaired MANY check engine light issues on all makes (except this bad boy!). ECU is typically getting an error code on air/fuel mixture reading where EGR is running too rich. Anyone else have any experience with this?
