Question 1999 528i E39 Engine Swap

Hi. I have a 1999 528I. I think I have the M52 engine. I'd like to buy another engine and start to slowly rebuild it so that I have a backup when the one I'm using now dies.
The question is what is the latest year of the M52 engine that will work in my car? I mean will a 2002, 2001, 2000 work? Thanks

I have a 99 528i with 227k and it is still going strong. I would not give up on your engine. My indie had a 528i in with over 300k still going strong the other day!

I've heard that from a few people and I think I will just keep it up and running. Thanks for your feedback.

2001-2003 I6 engine is the M54, not M52. You might be able to make it work if you have resources and fund.

The last year for M52 production was 1998. The M52TU was produced in 1999 and 2000 and then the M54 started in 2001. I am not sure of the exact months so you would have to do some research and compare to your vehicle production date.

As for what engine to rebuild. I would just get the exact one in the vehicle since when rebuild (if done properly) it will be like new and the actual age of the engine no longer matters.

Just to point out engine difference. In your original post, you want to swap an engine from 2001-2003 E39, which is M54, while your 99 528i has M52/M52TU engine.
As I said, it might work but requires resources and funds.
