Thumbs down BMW Wont start HELPPPPP! EWS Fault????

Hi guys I need help! I have a BMW e39 520i on a 2003 plate. I tried to turn on my car for the past new days and it wont crank. Since then its started intermittently now and again after 60 mins of turning the ignition on and off. When it starts intermittently I can turn the car on with both keys and when it doesnt start I try both keys and I get nothing. All the instrument clusters work fine. I have eliminated all the obvious stuff like-

1. Battery,
2. Starter motor
3. Fuses
4. Antenna ring
5. Ignition switch

I have had a guy come out to diagnose it and he said it was the EWS so i did some research on it:
When I bridge the 2 thick black wires on the EWS the car cranks but doesnt fire (fuel pump disabled?)

So ive tried to use IPNA (downloaded off the net). Ive used the installation guide. I use Parallels(vm) to use Windows XP on my mac. When I use it the 'ignition' or 'battery' doesnt have a black dot. Im using an OBDII lead off ebay. Im getting a 'IFH-0018 INITIALIZATION ERROR' or an application file error.

Ive been to BMW they can supply a new EWS. Can I directly plug and play? Or do I need to resync or programme modules?

Ive read that using IPNA i can resync the DME and EWS somehow?

1. Will that work? If so can I get help sorting out my IPNA?
2. If it doesnt what else can i try?

My emails- krishankansara@hotmail.com if you want direct communication.

THANKS!!!!

That INPA error is caused by an installation issue. I would just start installing INPA from the beginning. With INPA you can do the DME-EWS sync, and yes you can do it with INPA when you got it working. How did he diagnose it was the EWS?

I took it to my BMW service guy and he diagnosed it as the EWS and then I had a call out guy and he said it was the EWS too.

Yeah ive reinstalled it a few times, using the installation guide. Maybe its not recognising the port as a com? because im using a USB to OBD? Or because im using vm on a mac?

The IPNA file is 354Mb when unzipped. Seem like a fake version?

What installation guide have you used? The best I've found is: BMW DIS V57, SSS V32 & TIS V8 Installation Procedure . It's very long, but it covers a lot more than just INPA. Well I'm not sure how the virtualization works on MAC, but it shouldn't be an issue as long as you have the cable showing in the virtualized WIN. You should be able to select which devices are connected to virtualized operating system. Using USB to OBD isin't an issue. Have you configured which interface you are using during? My INPA installation was quite a bit larger due to fact I also installed DIS (aka GT-1), progman etc. You might want download a new INPA package to see if the current one is missing something. There are few download links in the the VERY best of E39 Links.

This is the forum I used for the software and the installation instructions:

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=564570

Ive chosen the OBD interface on the installation. Ive also reinstalled it and done other options just to double check and still got nothing?

I cant find the forum your talking about... You got a link handy by any chance?

For a description of the EWS, simply type /ews in the bestlinks, and this comes up:
- BMW_EWS_Drive_Away_Protection_Alarm_System.pdf (709.3 KB, 342 views)

Also, this comes up:
- How to understand the BMW E39 EWS alarm drive-away protection system (1) (2) (pdf) & troubleshoot the alarm & hood switch (1) (2) (3) (4) or replace the siren (1) or disabling or enabling the unlock chirp (1) (2) (3) & how to maintain (1) and repair your hood release bowden cable (1) (2) (3)

For INPA, typing /inpa nets this, among others:
- Making sense of the most often recommended BMW diagnostic tools & cable interfaces (1) & BMW factory & dealer programming, coding, and diagnostic software such as INPA, EDIABAS, NCS Expert, DIS, EasyDIS, Progman (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) (9) & related BMW diagnostic-tool forums (1) (2) (3) (4) (5)

If the INPA was a bad build, that build in the referenced thread should be good as many on this forum have used it.

If you mean the VERY best of E39 Links, you can find it as a sticky on this forum. As bluebee said that INPA package should work. So did do everything as it is said in that guide? Can you see the cable in the windows device manager?

Yeah ive followed the installation to the word! Also I can see the OBD lead on the windows devices and the drivers have been installed... Could it be a file that I am meant to move from one place to the windows folder? or a text file I should edit?

I took a quick look at that guide and it seems to do few thing differently than the BMW DIS V57, SSS V32 & TIS V8 Installation Procedure, which I used. You might want to download that pdf and try it out. If you want to just get INPA running you can skip pages 7-11, 17 and stop following it at page 27 (INPA should work now). I still think it is a installation issue.

Also my disk or EDIABAS folders dont have 'OBD.INI' file in them?

Or a 'serial port configuration' file... Am I using the wrong software version or something?

I would attach the OBD.INI to this post, but I can't due to forum restrictions. PM your email and I'll send you the OBD.INI.

Which version of INPA you got installed? You don't need to reset keys. There is issue either with your INPA install, or there is an issue with the car.

Just select your chasis (e39) -> Engine -> correct engine management for your engine -> error memory -> read error memory -> print them to file. For EWS it's select your chasis (e39) -> Body -> EWS -> error memory -> read error memory -> print them to file.

Clear error codes on both modules, disconnect the battery and make sure it's fully charged. Reconnect the battery after 30 minutes (remember to wait for navigation computer etc. to power down before disconnecting the battery). Try the DME-EWS sync again, if you still can't get the DME-EWS sync to work, you might want to try a different INPA package. When I installed my INPA I used ediabas-6.4.3-full. Google finds multiple downloads for it. One good source would be: http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/...64bit-t103023/
