Cracked Valve Cover & Leaking Gasket

Folks,

My 535i with just 32K miles very sanely driven (am not an aggressive driver.. maybe hit 4.5K RPM once in a while or so) started to smell burnt oil, like the ones when you change oil & the mechanic forgot to wipe the oil spilled on the exhaust pipes or so! Dealer checked and confirmed my valve cover (Plastic for Christ sake...) cracked and also suspected the gasket to have leaked. Ended up changing both!.. good it was under warranty.

Question raises... PLASTIC VALVE COVER?? how reliable are these cars? I know they use plastic coolant expansion chamber, vacuum cylinders, and all hose joints to engine (I know these are supposedly high temp & reliable ones but high pressure valve cover freaks me out) and several of my friends are having failures and expensive repairs at around 100K miles... but this is only 32K miles.... Sounds like BMW is trading engine weight for extra mpg, but do not care for expensive repairs...it ain't their wallet... !! have heard that the new 4 cyl turbo engines will have plastic oil pans!!

Any feedback? more people having these issues? anything to look for as early failure indicators to get rectified before the 50K mile warranty expires? thank you

Are you sure you are in the correct forum? This is the one for the 535 GT (F07).

Isn't the N55 engine the same in both F10 and F07 though?

Indeed they are but a quick look at the F10/11 forum does not show this question. I assumed the intended forum was that one and that the question was submitted to the F07 in error. Had it been in both,I would not have replied as I did.
