car shuts off when putting in reverse

Hello, i have a 98 bmw 740i, my problem is when im in drive and i switch to reverse say to back into a parking spot my car just shuts off completely like a power outage, everything comes right back on but still have to restart engine. I've read some things about camshaft position sensor, but i was thinking maybe something to do with the transmission since it only does it when going into reverse.
I tried pushing on the gas right after starting it up and putting it back in reverse, it was fighting me stalling and sputtering the car pretty much kept dying and starting on its own about three times before it finally got going.
even for a 15 year old car it seems electrical systems have this car overtaken. thanks for any input.
