I have a $25 scanner from auto zone that works fine on everything I've plugged it into. I use ncs on my laptop for the 7, but the scan tool cleared codes just fine before I started coding this car.

I think hes unaware of the technological aspects of his cars 20+ computer modules.
Search inpa, ncs expert, dashsoft and you will learn some basic things about bmw diagnostics and programming. Go to bmwcoding to read tutorials and have a better technical understanding of how all that works.

For your initial question; reading erasing check engine light codes can be done with any obd2 scanner, its the more bmw specific codes for other modules that you need bmw specific diagnostic hardware and software (it can also better pinpoint issues than a generic obd2 scanner)
