How much is he asking? Since this sounds like a private party sale, you can get a full history (up at least to 50K miles) from your local BMW service center. They will probably not give you a print out but in virtually every case will sit down with you and go over what has been done, any repairs, and (important!) any continual reflashes of the transmission. The reason they are so helpful is that they want you as a new customer! Be sure to read the transmission sticky at the top of the page.

It's an '05 so A/T sticky doesn't apply.

This is where we usually advise to especially look at:
- operation of panoramic roof
- window operation
- evidence of rain leaks
- fluid leaks (struts, diff., VCG, OFHG, etc.)
- noises from transfer case (ask for evidence that fluid has been changed)

Ask private seller if they are a member of an owner forum like Bimmerfest.

If they are, that tells you they know quite a bit about the X3 and how to treat it right!

+1 to the above from Supercourse.
I'd also add looking for broken rear coil springs and checking the air conditioning to that list

agreed, that mileage is when the following start to go south
CCV
VCG
OFHG
intake tube
belt tensioner/belt
front forward control arm bushings (tension struts)
auto tranny oil change
X drive fluid change

and around 100k miles you should look at a cooling system overhaul.

IMO that's a good price considering the mileage and the year!
If the previous owner has maintenance records it may be a good deal.
These vehicles are very easy to work on if you have the right tools.

Is it a 2.5i or 3.0i?

If it is a 3.0i with lots of extras (premium pack etc) it sounds like a bargain.

If its a base 2.5i, then its normal asking price, no special deal.

Make sure you check what previous guys said and you are good to go.

FYI: I bought my 07 with 90k miles. BMWs never die with proper maintenance

even a 2.5 is a good price if it has the premium package (auto climate control, etc)
