Watkins Glen

This is opening weekend for Watkins Glen International Speedway. I've had it on my calendar before but never drove the 90 minutes to get there. My wife and I went down today and for $25 you get to take three paced laps. The bring out about 20 cars at a time. Anyway, you have to sign a waiver and rules are issued, no passing, max speed of 55, no hot dogging, etc. Anyway I was expecting a nice leisurely drive under those conditions. Was I ever wrong! The first lap I just was getting used to the track and learning spacing and what the unwritten rules were. The next two laps were fun, lots of room and lots of speed. I really loved the corners, I've never gone around a corner that fast with so much control. I hit 90 a couple of times in the straight aways without really pushing it. I didn't think it made sense to really push with a bunch if amateurs out there, myself included. It definitely convinced me to pull the trigger on a driving school there and to make opening weekend my annual spring pilgrimage.

That's really cool! I didn't know Watkins Glenn did that. I'll have to check it out next time.

A fun fact from the latest Watkins Glen's President Michael Printup presentation I attended earlier this month:
Watkins Glen baby blue color used for side barriers is well known among the insurance companies.
