Adaptive Headlights Turning in Opposite Direction of Steering

Hi all,

Long story short, I've got a 2007 335i and my driver's side headlight went out and it turned out to be the driver's side Headlight Control Unit had gone out. ($500 part that's a circuit board a bit bigger than an iPhone and it requires removing the front bumper to replace... Seriously BMW?)

Anyway, my buddy's dad runs an Indy shop and he replaced the Headlight Control Unit and ever since, the adaptive headlights now swivel in the direction OPPOSITE the direction of steering... (e.g. I turn left, adaptive headlights turn right... I turn right, headlights turn left)...

Does anyone have any idea (or does anyone know for sure) what would cause this? Is it something that would require simple recoding, or something more involved that has to do with the actual hardware...?

Sounds like a connector is reversed so the + and - signals are backwards.

Do you have the bad board?

Poss failure due to something else, like an intermittent connector arcing. Very curious what went wrong....closeup photos both sides would be a strong start.

Or, you are dyslexic. Thank God you caught it now! What could have resulted in wrong-way driving or some other terrible faux pas has been caught in time....use your Obamacare, sir! Obama will pay your bills.

Could you elaborate? I didn't think it was possible for the connectors to be reversed? See pic...

If that is the connector, then there is no way. Did you follow the lead before the connector to make sure IT could not be reversed anywhere prior to the connector? Other than that, it can be a programming issue but very unlikely. Or, is this a European car? Lol!

My buddy's dad owns a shop that did the work. As far as I know, he unplugged the connectors and put a new unit in. Since the connectors are different sizes and shapes, I don't think they could have been reversed.

I think it's more of a programming issue, but I've also read somewhere that in the older 3 series (specifically the e46) that had adaptive headlights, a forum poster described "small gray boxes" as being specific to the driver and passenger sides and that when they were reversed, it caused issues with the adaptive lighting system... Assuming the e46 and e90 use a similarly built and composed adaptive lighting system, I'm wondering if the new board may have been for the other side of the car...

If you put the lights in the 'on' position instead of 'auto' it will completely disable the adaptive headlight feature. That should get you by until you figure our what's causing it.
