Well - I never got his answer to that question, so here is mine:

I have just got my rusting (double 528xi M-sport, black) tips replaced by my BMW dealer. I had an opportunity to take a look at the new "M performance" tips even before they were unpacked from the original shipping bags, and...

....well, They are "Made in China". 'nough said.

Hate to bump such an old thread, but the rusted tips are the only flaw on my 550. Trying to find a solution that doesn't cost $2,000. I can't even take them off to have them anodized without taking both mufflers off. Fail.

I have a 2012 550xi and my tips are rusting also. The car goes in for yearly maintenance and inspection in May and I will inquire about having the tips replaced.

Took the car to the dealer and they replaced the tips and mufflers under warranty. No hassle, no charge. If your car is under warranty and your exhaust tips are rusting take it to the dealer.

Does it mean owners of older F10s do not have this problem? If so, it would mean BMW started cost cutting only recently - and chances are they will return to the old technology of chrome-anodizing the tips, in which case it would make sense to wait a year or so, and only then request replacement. Doing it now could result in getting new tips from the same batch, i.e. also rusting.

If on the other hand, all F10 have had this problem since day one, the owners of the first models probably have already replaced their exhaust tips, in which case we would benefit if they informed us which way they followed (warranty replacement by BMW, or some aftermarket ones).

Thanks in advance!

2011 550i - no rust noticed. Although water does collect in and around these tips (even when washing the car) I've not seen any rust, thank God.

Quick fix black tail tips

Easy, quick fix, go to Home Depot, get a can of flat black grill touchup (HI Temp) paint and give it a shot. Covers completely and it works.

Easy and you don't have to leave your car at the dealer.....LOL

i have the carbon-build up on the exhausts. it's a sign too that your car's not burning its fuel as well as it should. however with ever DFI engine, you'll probably see this. when the tips are cold, use Gumout or WD40 with a rag and wipe off as much soot as possible (soak rag and apply). this should clean up a lot of the junk. a brillo pad will work to, to get rid of the heavier deposits. after that, use your favorite metal polish, P21S, Mothers, etc.

i've seen rust and try to keep that down. regular polishing will help to keep it minimized.

good luck!
