Mercedes C Class to BMW 3 Series

Hey guys,

This is my first post in this forum. My Mercedes Class was totaled last week and I am now considering a switch to a BMW 328i. I am interested in a 2009 to 2011 328i. I know the Mercedes C Class car inside and out but I am afraid I do not know the BMW all that well. I would like to reach out to this community and ask a couple questions that I have not been able to find online easily. Here goes:

1) What are the body styling differences between the 2009 to 2011?
2) Was the new model in 2011 or 2012?
3) What packages are a must have for these cars?
4) Any additional info I should have before shopping?

I appreciate any advice on the above in advance. Thank you and I look forward to joining this community!

Adam

Thanks for the feedback. Seem like simple questions I bet.. i am still torn between a C300 and a 328i. I should go drive some I think.

C300 is possibly more refined car

328i is more drivers car

I found C Class steering is too light.....

I agree about the light steering... The C300 is a nice car and a little sharper looking in my opinion. I think it's the wheels though as I don't like many of the BMW wheels. However, I have seen many that upgraded and they look amazing.

Question: Why do some have a light wood grain interior trim and some a darker trim? Do they each belong to a specific package?

When I was in the market recently I really though that I wanted a C to go along with my E350. After pouring through the performance numbers and driving several C's I was concerned. To be honest what bothered me most was I couldn't understand why the new C300's had the same engine as the C350 but de-tuned it. The older C300s were underpowered IMO and the C350s were too hard to find up here in MA - the dealers just don't seem to like to stock non-4Matics.

The C is a bit more refined and bigger, but it feels like they tried to make it more sporty than the E class but that took away from what they are good at. I don't know, it is like they try to make them more responsive, but in doing this this was only a marginal improvement but a significant degradation in the MB luxury feel. Bottom line, because of this I drove a couple 3's (which I didn't think that I would ever do) and when I finally drove a 335d I was sold! I still have the refinement and luxury in my E350, but now I also have some fun with my BMW at a very small compromise in luxury - none if compared to a C-class and world class handling for something that is not a pure sports car along with some outstanding power (not to mention 35ish mpg hwy). I am extremely happy with my decision. My only concern is reliability and that is something that I won't really know about for a while (I hope).

Up to buyers and Spec...

Buyers can choose interior trim at no extra cost

and M Sport Spec tend to come in Alluminium trim as standard

It is so personal, very hard to answer. For ME it was ZSP (Sport Package) and that's it. My wife wanted heated seats so I added ZCW (cold weather package). Hard to tell you that without knowing what are you looking for in that car.

Since I was just answering about it in another thread, be aware that pre 2010 models were subject to suspension crashiness. It wasn't a defect that dealer can fix, they were equipped that way. If your roads are First World country roads, then it doesn't matter, you won't notice the difference. But if your roads are anything like what we have here, then you will be better off with newer model.

1 and 2) It depends whether you're talking about the coupe or the sedan. The coupe still hasn't changed; it will debut this summer as a 4 series. The sedan was new as of last year. However, the coupe did change slightly in 2011 (BMW calls these mid-life kickers LCI, short for Lifecycle Impulse): better suspension, slightly different engine, a few styling things here and there. See Wikipedia for a short description: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_3_S...5.E2.80.932012.
3) It's all personal taste. Go to the BMW website to configure one (a coupe, at least, since that hasn't changed yet) to get a feel for what the packages are and what they cost. You can read what I chose in my signature.
4) Take a test drive. The BMW will feel different from your C Class -- you need to figure out if you like that. My wife and I shopped the Mercedes wagons before deciding on the BMW wagon. The main clincher was we found the BMW seats more comfortable. So you never know what you'll like and dislike.
