2014 Nav System

Just curious how the new nav system differs from the 2013 model. As well, a potentially ignorant question, will all the 2014 models have the identical nav system? Any chance that a 2014 ordered in March will have a different nav system from a model ordered in May?

Perhaps I'm getting confused with iDrive touch being released in July. I assume, aside from handwriting recognition, the nav system will be the same throughout the year.

Thanks.

The iDrive system (on which the Nav software runs) has upgraded HW (faster CPU, more RAM, bigger harddrive, improved graphics card). This yields faster response on all iDrive apps (Nav, communications, media player, etc.).

The 2014 Nav software has basically the same functions as in 2013 though I believe the maps are higher resolution, scrolling through lists is faster and the like.

I think it is unlikely that BMW will upgrade the hardware in the middle of the model year, though I suppose it is possible they could start shipping the touch controller in the middle of the year. I expect it to appear first on the 2014 X5 before it makes an appearance on the X3. BMW releases gadgets and tech on the higher end first and then it trickles down to the less expensive models. The software will be upgraded whenever the newest maps are available.

I agree with pharding, the "Touch" system was shown on that video that is lurking around. They said they are first releasing in China due to their complex language. I would imagine its going to take a number of years before released in the US, and then at that point prob in the 7 series first.

What improvement or capability will iDrive touch offer?

it works like the touchpad on a notebook computer. The top surface of the idrive control knob is a touchpad in this disclosed but yet to be released version of idrive
