Angry Annoying - Heat/AC Turns on Every Time When Car is Started

Hello,

Every time I start my car the heat or AC turns on. Even if I turn the heat/AC off, and it's still turned off when I shut the car off, the heat/AC turns back on the next time the car is started! How can I prevent this from happening? For example, if the heat is turned off when I shut the car off, the heat shouldn't come back on when I start the car up again.

I actually don't mind the A/C, vent turning on by default. If I live by the beach and have a convertible, different story. That's just me. Back to your posts, I am sure you can find someone to code it for you so that the A/C, vent stay off upon every start. Anyone in the CT area recommend JPetrillo a BMW coding specialist?

You can fix this without coding.

Right. And during the winter months it was really nice to have the heat automatically turn on every time I got in the car. But that's not my point. If the heat was on when I turned off the car, then yeah, I would expect it to still be on when I start the car up again. However, if I turn the heat off, then it should remain off, and it should not turn itself back on the next time the car is started; it should stay turned off, which was the setting it was set to at the time the car was turned off.

Thanks. This is what I was hoping to hear. If you remember how to do it, please let me know. Otherwise I will play with the settings tomorrow and try to figure it out.

Several threads on this here already. I have not found a solution yet. It works like that for some, but for most of us, it always comes on.

I would love an answer to this as well. It is my biggest complaint about the car. Is re-coding the only answer?

For me, automatic climate control means just that, mine is always on. I don't remember this, but if you turn the unit completely off, then do a memory save, will that save the "off" setting? Remember, your memory 1 and 2 positions remember radio stations, mirrors and steering wheel, seat, and climate settings. I can't remember if people state that they tried this and it doesn't work.

This is the most annoying aspect of the car. Hate it! I don't drive all that much so it's almost charming in its quirkiness, but if I was doing lots of all day driving around town it'd seriously drive me nuts.

Ya. I havnt gotten in my car yet. But thats what i think too.
Set your climate to whatever you want. Or off.
All your other settings
I.e. radio, seat, mirrors, pre sets ect.

Then save your memory seat.
Pretty much what you just said but i think i was more typing it so I could figure out in my head if it made sense.
Sounds right to me.

Not sure if that works. I'm pretty sure I've made my settings when the HVAC was off and it still comes on when I start the car. I'll try it again and make sure it's off next time.

This seems to have worked.

Turn the car on, while the car is running, turn your Heat/AC off, now use the seat memory button to save your settings while the car is still running, then turn the car off. Now when you start the car it remembers the last setting. So for example, if your heat was off when you turned your car off, the heat will remain off the next time you start your car. If your heat was on when you turned your car off, the heat will remain on the next time you start your car. Exactly the way it should work!

I will try this too, but I would like to point out that this annoying feature does not surface if you restarted the car back quickly. only if sufficient time has passed after the engine stop, and then you restart, does the car forget the prev settings and reset it to Heat/AC ON.

Oh damn. Yeah, I turned the car back on quickly. It seemed to work though. I turned the car off while the heat was off, and when I turned the car back on the heat was still off. Then I turned the car off with the heat on, and when I turned the car back on the heat came on too. Then I turned the heat off again, turned the car off, and turned the car back on and the heat was still off. So seems to be working as I expected, but I just dropped it off at the shop and won't have it back for at least two days. I won't be able to test this again for a while. The true test will be to see what happens when you start the car after letting it sit all night.

Do you guys who are troubled by this, actually normally drive with your HVAC totally off? Or do you just want the "fun" of turning it on by yourself? I mean, I do turn off the AC (ie., snowflake button) on a nice spring day, but otherwise, I have it in Auto mode 99% of the time. There's no need to delay turning it on upon startup if you do intend to run the HVAC.

Yes, I need it to be turned off as much as possible. I have very bad dry eyes and having it on irritates my eyes. I can put it on my feet only, which helps, but not completely, and then my feet get too hot. That might sound silly, but it's true.

This isn't about a delay in turning it on, this is about our desire that it default to the last setting. If it was off when we turned off the car, we want it to stay off.

I live in CA and the weather in my area is nearly always perfect. Other than perhaps a few days during the winter when the morning temperatures dip, I never turn it on and it sucks that there doesn't appear to be an easy solution yet....

It's like the engine start/stop feature. If you don't like to keep the option enabled, do you like having to disable it every time you start your car? I know I don't. For me it's the same with my Heat/AC. If I want it off when I start my car, because it was off when I finished using it last, it should be off. Is this not the logical thing to do? Turn it on when you want it on, turn it off when you don't want it on. Don't turn back on again until I tell you to. Very simple.

Try my original suggestion, which seems to have been credited to another responder. The memory system saves your HVAC settings. If you turn it off and then don't do a save, it's going to return to the previous saved setting. Not 100% sure it will save "Off" position, but it certainly won't work unless you save it in Off mode.

I tried setting the memory with it off today, multiple times. Did it while the car was running, and didn't turn on the HVAC at all during my drive on purpose (wouldn't have anyway 'cause had the sunroof and windows down as it was a nice day), and then saved it AGAIN when I stopped, and then once more when I turned the engine off. All with the HVAC off.

Went back to the car after about 20 minutes and the damn thing was automatically on again.

Would love to hear from BMW themselves as to why they do this. An oversight, to be annoyingly controlling, or because there's some engineering method behind it, that goes further than simply making it so the HVAC is on enough to not stink.

To make matters worse, if I remember correctly a Member here posted about the "fan" icon on the button disappearing because of how BMW coats their plastic icons (apparently it's dyed on top of the plastic inside of "inside of it"), and because he would always have to press it when getting into the car. Now every time I turn mine off I make sure to use the back of my finger (I do that with all the buttons if I can help it, due to paranoia of "disappearing icons").

Your answer: For a long time now the engine bay has been crammed with a big engine which generates lots of heat. Add humidity and you're going to get warm moist air into the passenger compartment. Almost doesn't matter how cool it is outside. It has been like this since the E39/E46 days.

I'm not saying your car is functioning normally because my E90 will start with AC off with the HVAC in manual but not Auto mode ( Auto won't work well without AC on btw.).

Funny note: My wife loves to drive her car with AC off and it drives me nuts because the interior side of windshield develops this haze from the moisture attaching itself to dust/dirt.

Funnier note: Years ago on a winter evening I passed an E39 whose windows were fogged up. A few miles later I pulled im for gas and the E39 showed up shortly thereafter. As the driver got out to grab some paper towels and pump.gas I asked if her AC wasn't working. She looked at me weird (It was winter) and cautiously said Yes it works. I then proceeded to show her that the AC must be on if she wants to get the condensation off her windows. She didn't believe me at first but that changed as her window started to defog. Go figure.
