X5 3.0d - power steering fail. Turned ac off and power steering worked, albeit with a

Hi,
looking for ideas as to a cause for an issue on my 04 x5 diesel.

Today I was making a 3 point turn when the battery light came on the dash. I immediately noticed the power steering had failed. Because the battery light came on, I turned the air conditioning off.

Keep in mind the actual car was running at all times.

Once I turned the air conditioning off the power steering started working again. I was able to drive the car home.

While driving home I noticed that for some turns the battery light came on, briefly, and the power steering failed ever so slightly. There was also a faint burning smell coming from the engine bay the hole way home.

Once home I turned the car off for a few hours and later went out to see if the issue had gone, it hadn't and the smell was still present, especially with the air conditioning turned on.

Since this issue first arose the air conditioning has not worked.

If anyone is able to offer advice please do.

Thanks

So, reading some threads, looking back at the last service report, it pointed towards fan belt pulleys. I've taken the covers of the engine to view these with the engine on and engaging the ac.

Some pulleys are not running true and some appear to slip or jolt.

I'm fairly sure this is the issue, is anyone able to confirm or send me details of previous issues such as mine??

Thanks people.
