Just purchased 2013 E93 Coupe no cig lighter under glovebox

Hi all, second week with my 2013 335i xdrive M-Sport. Coming from an 08 Porsche 911 4S. I love this car! BMW has me for life. Purchased from Bridgewater BMW pre owned with 700 miles (Great dealer, treated me like gold).

My question is that I installed my Valentine one one and need a receptacle for power. Ran the wire behind and under dash. The manual says there is one under the glovebox. When I checked there is an empty hole but no receptacle. Took it to my local dealer and the service department says nothing I can do since there is no wiring harness to connect to (Westchester BMW, very abrupt service tech). Is he right?

Thanks
John

Go to a different dealer. The car should have a power outlet and if it doesn't it should be fixed under warranty. Westchester BMW service tech treated you poorly and you should report him to his manager.

Surprising, isn't it? Why, I simply Googled "V1 install F30" and this was my first click. First try! I'll be recommending this search engine in the future, believe you me!

OK!

I'll bite: Why would you go from 911 to a 3?

Guys, thank you all for such fast replies. Ok, first I could not figure out how to right the picture, thank you GarySL. Second, traded in the Porsche 4S because it is just too much of a pain to get in and out of. Im 53 and thought I would really like a car I can enjoy everyday. I am in and out of the car because of my business 20 times a day and I just could not use the Porsche as a daily driver. So it just sat in the garage. I bought it CPO with 8,000 miles and put another 8,000 in two years mainly driving it up to the summer home in the Catskills. I am soooo happy with this BMW. I am so confused with all this E92, E93 stuff so thanks again Gary. So regarding the receptacle, I am a little pissed at how I was treated at Westchester BMW, I am going to complain to the manager but will definitely not go there for any service. I have 5 authorized BMW dealers within 20 mins of where I live in White Plains NY. Thank you CALWATERBOY for the link regarding the Valentine One but man oh man that looks like a pain in the neck. I think I will just stick with the under glovebox solution for now although when I have time I would like to install it right. I purchased the xdrive because of the possibility of snow but wish the suspension was a bit tighter as well as lower. After reading many posts doesn't look like lowering the car is an option. The car came from factory with 18" M rims but still wish it was a bit lower, too much space but I can live with it. Again, I can't get enough of this car! I am trying to post a pic of the interior but again it's upside down, what am I doing wrong? I went to manage attachments but see no way to flip it. It was saved correctly on my drive but not when I post.
Thanks again
John

It's very easy to hardwire your V1 to your car. There are numerous threads here about this but basically you use the adapter that came with the V1 and the straight cord. The fuse box is in the back of the glove box under a removable panel. Run the straight cord under the molding at the front of the headliner and down the passenger A pillar then under the dash to the fuse box. Find a proper fuse and use the adapter to attach it. Piece of cake and should take 30 minutes at most.

If you hardwire the V1 install an RJ11 Coupler like the one in the picture below at the top of the windshield slightly to the right of where the V1 will be mounted,

They are available at radio shack and they are available in black. You can attach it with double sided foam tape. You can then make a short RJ11 to RJ11 cable which will run from the V1 to the pass through.

The cable, RJ11s and crimp tool are also available at radio shack. You can also probably find a short RJ11 cable there.

With this setup there will not be a cable dangling when the V1 is not in the car and in case the rather flimsy lock tab on the RJ11 cable snaps you can simply replace the short jumper cable.

I paid $29 for a local stereo shop to hard wire/install my V1, with a standard black 4 wire telephone wire into the overhead light. It only turns on when the car starts up & turns off when the car stops. V1 manufacturer doesn't recommend this medthod, since they want to sell you more parts, but this medthod has worked in my past 7 cars (between 2 V1's) over the years. Works great!

Standard telephone cables work fine with the V1. I use them in rental cars all the time.

If you're planning on using the remote display, you'll want a 4-wire cord to implement the remote silence button. For power only, using the button on the front of the V1 for silence, a 2-wire cord is all that's necessary.

The OP is saying a 2013 E93. Did BMW continue making the vert after stopping production of the sedan and coupe? I know they did this with the E30 but didn't think you could get an E93 model year 2013.

  • Bring the pic up in PAINT
  • Upside down? ROTATE 'til right side up
  • Save file
  • Re-post

Small correction....OP says 2013 335i xDrive Coupe - from BMWNA's web site:

And, yup, E93 still with us. Sedans, xDrive or no, are F30's.

Yes, you can get a 2013 E93 convertible. Got mine in Germany in September. They are still in production, but not sure until when. The 4 series convertible is due to start production in November of 2013.

Don't know if its a missing order code or random BMW evilness. My 2011 335 has an open tray which I use to drop in my phone but the 2013 135 came with a lighter/tray cover & no convent place for my phone but my cargo pockets.

My 2013 335is I picked up 1 month ago also doesn't have the cigarette lighter under the front right footwell. Just an empty socket. My 335is also came with a cigarette lighter and ashtray with a fold down cover. Seems somewhat odd as all the pictures I've seen of 335is haven't had the cover or lighter just a pocket/tray

Well, it looks like they put the smoker's package (lighter and covered ashtray) back in and took the one under the glove compartment out.

It's an either/or. If you have the covered compartment with a lighter, you won't have the power socket under the glove compartment (the lighter uses the harness connection the under-dash socket would have). If you have the under-dash socket, you won't have the lighter.

To the OP - use the power adapter wired off of the fuse panel. A permanent installation using the portable cigarette plug may have a tendency to work loose when you don't expect it or lose the spring tension and stop working. You're better off hard-wired.

Neither coupe nor convertible production has ended yet.
