Mein Auto: 2001 BMW Z3 3.0 Roadster
ASC and ABS Lights on

Hi guys,

I have a little issue with my 2001 BMW Z3 3.0 Roadster. So, this is the problem; I randomly get the ASC and ABS warning lights on my dashboard, sometimes I get this when I'm driving on bad tarmac but sometimes I start the car and the warning is already there or even in good tarmac. First I thought it was a false warning but I try the brakes and there was no ABS, same with the ASC just a little bit of gas and I can send the car sideways, if I press the ASC switch nothing happens the light stays on all the time. OK so here is the weird thing, if a drive a little bit with the warning lights on (around 10 min) and if I try to pull a powerslide or do some "11s" the light goes off, same thing when start the car and the light is on I just give the car some gas and the ASC takes control again; sometimes stopping the car, turn it off then on works too, but is kind a pain in the arse when I'm driving in the freeway; I don't want to stop to do that or pulling a slide in heavy traffic and driving without ABS and ASC it can get a little bit tricky (fun... but tricky).
So... anyone got this issue or knows how to solve it?

Thanks.

Probably a bad wheel sensor. The stability control system, ASC, needs a fully functional ABS system to work. A fault in the ABS will disable both systems. An intermittent ABS fault is usually a bad wheel sensor but a fault in the ABS module is also possible. You have to read the stored error codes to help pinpoint the cause.

The Peake R5 et al won't read ABS codes to the wheel level. A much fancier scan tool is required. A good indy shop that does BMW will have a reader that will tell which wheel sensor is setting the fault.

I had the same thing happen to my 2001 2.5i Roadster, purchased June 2012 with 84K. Turns out it was a defective Yaw (rotation speed) sensor. The car has been laid up at the Indy repair shop here in western NC, apparently waiting for the right part.Click image for larger version

I'm looking forward to getting the car back, three weeks after bringing it in for service. One good thing is the heavy wetness that was discovered under the driver-side carpeting+foam. Judging by the mildew, this section has been wet for years, so the drying-out period was worthwhile.

It's possible you're experiencing a problem with your ASC module. I had the same problem off and on for years, and finally got the module repaired last month. Check out the writeup on the other Bimmer site... http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...On-DIY-sort-of

The wiring where it passes through the trunk floor is subject to fracturing, and is one of the first places I look when faced with those symptoms.
