Well with 127,000 on the odo my passenger side cat failed.. It's rattling pretty bad. I now have a cel p0420. What cats are you guys using for a weld in application?? I saw a few from manga flow, walker and catco..
Any opinions?? I do have to mention I am on a budget.. I'm not tryin to get a straight bolt in for$1200.00 per side.

What year 540? The later models have 2 cats per bank and tend to have more trouble with after market cats than the older ones. I have random technologies. Mine are the race ones however, but they do have street legal ones as well which meet even CARB requirements. They make top of the line products.

Ok I found some that fit and sound NICE with my exhaust system.. I got em for dirt cheap too and they're brand new!! Total cost including labor to install them a whopping $400.00.
I found the Magnaflow 45005 CARB approved for $125.00 ea.+shipping and tax. so I bought a pair.. Got em welded in for another $120.
All the shops in my area were charging me 700-800 and up. My car sounds mean!!

Where did you find them for $125? I'm seeing about $200+ from most online vendors.

Also, the Magnaflow site shows 46105 as the CARB universal fit for the earlier E39s.

Thanks.

Just found out NY will be going CARB on June 1st. While my Cats are still fine, wondering if I should just change them out at 120k since 49 State vs CARB is almost 2x the cost. So planning ahead since I'm keeping my 540 for another decade, if possible.

I did some searching on the forum. I came across that part number (45005). They are made by magnaflow. I also found that most places were just about $180.00 and over.
Then I found this website maxautosupply.com I thought it was a typo at first but there it was $123.00 for magnaflow 45005 CARB approved for CA!!!!
I thought it was a hoax!! They are under my car now and my po420 code is gone. I had to reset the cel but it has not come back. I'm goin in for inspection Monday .

Per magnaflow website:
For CARB vehicles you need the 446105 or 46105. Don't know the difference between the two (they look the same). Universal fit. I know that magnaflow changed the part numbers for this particular carb cat awhile back. The OP might have used the old part number.

$170 on max auto site.

Interesting. 45005 on the MF website is also CARB approved but for Dodge, Ford, and a bunch of other non BMW cars. However, it does also work on engines bigger than 4.4l on those other cars.

$119 on max auto site.

I wonder if any CARB certified cat works for the E39?

Let us know how your inspection goes blingin.

I didn't take before numbers. I knew i had a bad cat. I had the p0420 code and I could hear a rattling in my cat. I then hit my cat with the rubber hammer and I could hear that something was rattling on the inside. So I had to get some for the inspection.

Damn, looks like maxautosupply.com went out of business because they were selling them so cheap.

Website no longer exists but you can buy the website name for $3,000. That should make up for the low margins on the cats. LOL!
