E90/E92 Stereo Systems

Hi Bimmerfest,

I'm having some trouble finding an answer as I am searching the forum for information regarding the sound systems in 2010 and 2011 335's in particular.

From what I understand the 2010 and 2011 E90 and E92 both come with an 8 speaker "hifi system" standard with the Harmon Kardon upgrade available as a stand alone option. The problem that I am encountering is such a vast difference in the sound quality of the cars that I am test driving that all supposedly have the base stereo.

I'm hoping someone can help me summarize the difference between 2010, 2011, E90 and E92 standard systems and the optional Harmon Kardon systems.

Thank you in advance to all of those who make this forum such a great resource to perspective BMW owner as well as current owners.

There are three basic systems offered world wide Logic 7 or top Hi Fi , Hi Fi or premium , and stereo. When it comes to the US the base system(the don't pay for it option)it was the Hi Fi in every year but 2010 and early 2011 when the ampless tweeterless stereo system was issued in the US as the lowest non pay for it option and the Hi Fi was not an option(and hi fi wasn't offered at all in the US). The Hi Fi was returned to the lowest stereo option available after the first few months of 2011 production in sept 2010 I believe so in 2011 early build there is still a chance of getting the downgraded stereo. The rest of the World has been getting this the stereo system as the no pay for it option for along time now. Logic 7 was free in the 330 and the first year or two of the 335 then became a pay for it option.

The specs and methods for modifying the stereo are listed in the links above.

Thanks for the informative answer and links!

I have been using http://www.rubmw.ru/vincode/eng/ to determine the options on a car. I am able to tell from the pictures of cars if they have Harmon Kardon(Logic7) but I am not sure how to tell which cars have the basic system without an amp...which in my opinion sounds kind of crappy to a 2011 Hifi or the Logic7 system in my 2007 335xi.

Does anyone know the option codes for all 3 stereos so I am able to tell using the VIN decoder?

There will be no tweeters with the stereo system

There will be no tweeters (front door tweeters for 2011 and beyond) with the stereo system
There will be no amp in the trunk with stereo system.
Option numbers changed by year but not that often or that much usually a letter added or subtracted.
If you look in the pdf it lists option codes.
Hi Fi is 676
and top hi fi is 677
I think stereo is 675 not sure.

The basic system has no a-pillar door tweeters; pretty easy to see in most picture sets.

Ctuna beat me to it...

I've got it all straight now...thanks so much!

So it seems like I am focusing in on 2011's now. It looks like while I am looking at a 2011 now I can tell the difference from the Hifi and the Harmon Kardon system by looking for the Harmon Kardon badge on the "A" pillar.\

One more questions regarding the audio system:

I'm 99% sure BMW introduced A2DP on the bluetooth equipped models 2011+....is that correct? If a car I am looking at does not have the "Y" Ipod connector in the armrest I can just play music from my iphone over bluetooth.

Only idrive is a2dp capable

Only idrive is a2dp capable and a car may or may not have the option .
I think it comes with the combox .
Tweeter Pods in the Door sills at the front of the window indicate either Hi Fi or
L7 . L7 will have a center dash speaker and equalizer settings and some other settings
in the idrive or radio functions. 2011's of the September 2010 build or later should have
Hi Fi at least as indicated by tweeter pods in the front doors.

For A2dp
Only in CIC/Combox cars (MY2011.5+ in the USA)
from Technic

CIC is the new idrive box I believe

For a BMW Hi Fi is the easiest to upgrade for sound quality.

For a BMW Hi Fi is the easiest to upgrade for sound quality.(although not cheap)
If you read the links I supplied at the beginning of this thread it
tells you how and why.
If you want to do a head unit there are things you need to be aware of.
The original Head Unit must be connected for software updates and some repairs.
You may get error messages depending on what options the car has and there is
stuff attached to the Head Unit that won't work without it in place such as SOS ,PDC
BMW bluetooth phone and CDC or BMW ipod.

I have a 2011 328 with Nav and the audio system is amazing. It's one of the best I've heard in a car. The soundstage is huge and detailed, even with mp3s.

One of the first songs I heard on it was Bowie's "Quicksand" and it blew me away. It is a very dynamic, clean, expertly engineered recording (Tony Visconti) and the system relayed those nuances with clarity and accuracy; I can speak to accuracy as I listen at home with amazing reference monitors.

I don't know which system I have, but there are two 4ish" drivers in the front doors. There are two killer drivers in the front pillars. Under each front seat is another driver; I'm guessing subs or very low hz bass drivers. I haven't even looked in the rear of the car, but there are 6 drivers up front and they do a hell of a job.

I'll look at the original window sticker tomorrow and let you know.

Does anyone know if the newer BMW's with the top end stereo system has time correction?

My 07 has the top end stereo and it appears to not have any time correction.
I have fairly high end taste when it comes to car audio and I cannot stand listening to a stereo without time correction anymore.

Standard Hi Fi System upgrade is

Jl xd600/6 or now the have Jl xd 800/8 and other variaitions.
Why fits in the stock location , Interfaces with the stock head unit or idrive
with no adapters, sounds good , has crossover adjustments and is good quality stuff.
Upgrade your front doors and tweeters according to speaker tastes and budjet.
You need a Technic Harness and Speaker adapters (for most speakers)plus a power kit.
Front fitment is a issue use speakers from the list in the audio upgrade thread.
Morel , Jehnert and Focal are the common high end brands used.
Upgrade the floors according to speaker taste and budget.
Upgrade the rears if you want to but don't spend as much money.
If you are bass head add a subwoofer and sub amp(if necessary).
If you want to get really deluxe add a processor or processor/amp.

No time correction to my knowledge on L7

No time correction to my knowledge on L7
or any of the commonly known BMW stereo systems.
If you live in Portland you should vist MusicarNW . They
probably can demo some awsome stuff for you.
They are noted as the leading BMW audio shop in the nation and
they sell ready to install high end kits, that require no soldering ,crimping or in some
cases audio adjustments . Also vist there website for the solutions
they have layed out for all the common systems.
