Brake pads without clips

Hello internet friends. I have a 2008 328i on which I must change the front brakes. When I got pads from auto zone, both the inner and outer pads have clips on the back, but my outside pads currently on the vehicle don't have any. The pads that go on the cylinder have three prongs that hold it into the cylinder. The other side of the caliper doesn't have any place for clips to connect to.

Where do I find the right pads outside of a BMW dealership?

Thanks,
damccull

Those pads are correct but obsolete. The pad set with clips on the outer pads is an older part that has been superseded by the clip-free design. Per the BMW TIS, either is acceptable.

Edit: Are the pads identical except for the clip? You may just need to bend the clip slightly to get it to fit in the caliper. If there are any other differences in the pads, or they will not fit at all, return them and stick to genuine BMW parts. If your local dealer has unreasonable prices, try an online vendor such as Tischer BMW or Bavarian Autosport.

Further edit: Forget what I said about the obsolete/superseded parts--I forgot for a moment the 335i has different brakes from the 328i. Sorry for any confusion...basically, save yourself the aggravation and go to a vendor that specializes in European cars.

Re: Brake pads without clips

The pads I bought are these (I have since returned them) http://m.autozone.com/autozone-mobil...ko29?id=823466

The inner pad has the three prong clip and fits perfectly. The outer one has a clip that's on the back. My caliper has nowhere for that clip to go so it's in the way. Other than the clip I can't see any differences between that and my old pads.

My OEM replacement pads on the front didn't have the clips either. It is probably for the assembly line. Keeps them from falling off and they move down the line.

Re: Brake pads without clips

Problem is the clips are permanently riveted on. They aren't detachable. The BMW dealership service department told me the correct brakes don't have clips either.
