For a top-up? A quart of Mobil 1 0w-40 European formula would be best, but a quart of Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic should be fine as well if you can't find the other.

Top tip - carry a couple of quarts in your trunk. You only need to carry one, but for some reason, carrying two seems more sensible.

Exactly.

Your owner's manual covers this very situation--they say the BMW-approved oil, but in a pinch, you can get away with 1 quart of non-approved stuff.

EDIT: Specifically, page 217 of my (2007) owner's manual states this. It states "If BMW High Performance Synthetic Oil is not available, you can add small quantities of other synthetic oils in between oil changes. Only use oils with the API SH specification or higher."

BTW, since this is explicitly an "oil" thread. Does anyone have any info on the supposed new low-volatility oils to help prevent carbon fouling in our N54/N55 engines? If there's something to these, I'll go ahead and start doing my own oil changes/get the dealership to use this oil. ANYTHING to prevent that crap from caking the back of my intake valves.
