Mind = blown

Well first off, I have an '03 X5 3.0i.

So a month ago I went to drive the car and bam, wouldn't start. It cranks when the key turns but 8 times out of 10 it wouldnt turn over. sometimes it would turn over and the engine would fire but a second later the car would turn off and make a grinding noise. After a day of this, the battery eventually died (no air/radio, dim lights) and everytime i turned the key it wouldnt do anything except make a faint clicking noise. So i got the battery charged and wham, the car started no problem.

2 weeks later, same EXACT things happens (even went to test battery and alternator at 2 different places, both said they were good) With no luck i get it towed to my indy shop. They couldnt get it to start, then they charge the battery, car starts. They keep it for another day to monitor it. Its good and i pick it up and joyride/run errands for the rest of the day. car runs/starts like a champ. everything is good.

next morning, wouldnt start. same symptoms as above. i say eff it and buy a new battery. car then starts and then turns off a second later. call indy, they get it towed to the shop. right when they get it, it starts. its been starting ever since but they are keeping it there in an attempt to find something wrong.

basically it starts at the shop, i bring it home, next day and it wont start the next morning.

any explanations/thoughts?

Your car has what is known as 'stage fright'. In rare cases cars perform well under the pressure of a mechanics shop but will not perform in other places. This often results in difficult and/or erroneous diagnoses. Be very careful.
