1000 mile review Sport Line

I will only list the negative, because there are too many positive things to list. Basically the car is amazing, except a few things.

1. Wind noise from drivers and passenger front windows. I just went on a long trip this weekend and the constant wind noise was driving me crazy. My front passenger could hear it from his side too so it doesn't look like it's an adjustment issue. One friend commented and said he believes that it is noise that is coming off the side mirrors, possibly a lack of aerodynamics.
2. Clunking noise coming from rear cabin and trunk. (thread on this)
3. For long trips, I wish the seat bolsters would relax just a bit more. You tend to feel squeezed after a while.

Anyhow, other than this, the Sport Line is beautiful and in general, the car is amazing.

The seats get better. After about 7000 miles, mine are much more worn in, and more comfortable. Did a 400 mile drive up to Maine when the car had about 5000 miles and was perfectly comfortable.

Also I assume you know they are adjustable.

I also think there is excessive wind noise from mirrors, there was a whistling noise coming on my car they have replaced the a pillar windows external seals, I got the car back now the noise is intermittent but obvious at highway speeds, I am not happy with this issue, now I have to go back.

That's good at least they are trying to address the problem. I wonder if the wind noise on my car is from the mirrors or if there is actually a leak. I'd like to hear from others on this wind issue.

My 2013 is pretty darn quiet even at 70 mph on the highway. That should be in indication that, if yours isn't, there should be something BMW can do to fix the issue.

Thanks for the feedback. It's nice to hear that others are as quiet as I expect mine to be.

No long trips, but on the trips I have taken to a certain wine shop in Ft Worth I have not detected any wind noise at speeds up to 85mph. Just the same as the 2004 E46 I used to have. At those speeds, both my last two cars (Lexus) exhibited wind noise and became slightly unstable when the wind buffeted the car at around 90 degree angle.

Both Bimmers I have owned have been exceptional, the best of all the cars I have owned at wind noise suppression and staying glued to the highway.

I have very noticeable wind noise on my E90 coming from the mirrors. I have to admit, on my F30 test drives I never tried driving with the windows down. I've kind of gotten used to it with the E90 but would definitely prefer not to have it on the new car. Should be able to comment within a week or so.

My drive home from the dealership I was on a euphoric high so I heard nothing.

After that, my first drive on the freeway I immediately noticed a noise if wind coming from the drivers side window. The reason why it was so apparent to me, is because I do not remember this coming from any F30 loaner I have had in the past (and trust me, I had a lot of them!).

I am still not liking the sport seats. That's my biggest complaint so far.

In terms of the other 2, the wind noise doesn't really bother me. Also, I haven't noticed any clunking noise from the trunk.

The other issue I have is HUD. It's inconsistent. Most of the time, the messages display perfectly. However, every now and then, the top part of the message is completely cut off. I just can't see it. The speed display is never a problem. It's just messages that pop-up like when someone calls for example. It works more often than not, but when it doesn't work, it's really annoying. This is an issue no matter how I adjust the height or rotation.

What exactly don't you like about the sport seats?

The clunking is on ALL Sport Lines. It's basically a matter of what kind of roads you drive on. If you are lucky enough to have smooth roads or not too many sharp bumps, you'll probably never hear it.

As far as the wind noise, you say it doesn't bother you. Does that mean it's there or not?

I don't like the thigh / leg bolsters on the seats. I feel like it's always digging into my left leg. It must be the way I sit. I have consciously tried to adjust how I sit, but I am just having a hard time adjusting to it. My right leg isn't a problem. However, I am finally getting to a point where I don't dislike them as much as I did when I first got the car. So that's progress...

I do hear wind noise, but I don't think it's that bad relative to anything else I ever drove. I'm just not really bothered by it.

I have never ever heard any clunking noise. I almost wish I didn't read this, because now I am going to listen for it real closely, and now I might hear it...

The only time I EVER drive with windows down is in town, with my dog. No reason at all
to allow dust and dirt into my environment.

I'm sure I would feel different if we were living in Hawaii, but never on the open highway!

When driving with the windows down, make sure to put them *all* down, especially when you plan on hitting highway speeds.

The first time I put the front windows down and zoomed onto the highway, there was so much wind noise my eyes did that thing where they involuntarily open super wide because your hearing has suddenly dropped out. And the amount of wind in the cabin is a beating.

With all of them down it's very pleasant.

In these days of wind tunnel testing and a high level of focus on aerodynamics it seems to me pretty unlikely they'd have missed mirrors causing wind noise. Makes me wonder if your issue is more likely related to faulty weather trim sealing.

I think it is seal, the car is very quiet otherwise I will not be able to hear this whistling noise, with music on it is not that noticeable, e90 was a bit louder in wind noise at highway speed I think. It is hassle though. I am glad just this minor stuff, on my 2011 e90 not one single issue in 34 months of use, I was pleasantly surprised as my 07 had some very minor trim issues in first 3 years.

I've been trolling on this thread myself and the one on whistling noises, and the one on steering wheel vibration. All of them related to F30 Sport Lines.

I've put 5000 miles on my Sport Line on highway, crappy pot holed city streets, and wash board dirt roads. I'm listening and trying but, I can't detect any of these issues on my car. FWIW.

Are my senses too dull to notice such things?

The noise I'm talking about that I'm
describing as a clunk is really a case of the hard low profile tires making the cheap trunk materials (plus a couple other areas) echo when you go over an uneven crack in the road. Potholes don't give the same noise because they are so loud even with normal tires.
I don't experience a whistling noise, I'm just getting a lot of wind noise from the front windows that I didn't get on Non Line loaners. Dealer says its normal. I don't believe them.

No steering wheel vibration though. :-)
