doors lock and unlock themselves

my '95 525i door locks all go up and down together while we're driving down the road. in addition and even worse, we have to start the car before closing the driver door or else the locks will all go down and the car won't start. when that occurs we have to lower the driver window, reach out and unlock the driver's door with the key, open the door and then start car, close the door and drive away. please help me solve this one. the mechanic hasn't figured it out yet.

The battery for the key fob. This is just a wild guess, of course, but I recall whenever my old Honda used to flip the door locks off and on by itself, it was time to replace the CR2025 battery in the fob. Always fixed it. Drove me nuts until I figured it out by trial and error.

thank you and good observation but we don't use the fobs anymore, just the key (not worth stealing anyway).
by the way, does it help to know that the driver door handle often sticks on the open position when pulled to open the door.
we often have to push it back in to close the door.

When my Honda acted up I didn't have to be using the key fobs. They only had to be in the vicinity of the car. How long since you used the fobs? Do you store them in the car? If so, try replacing the fob batteries.

However, if this suggestion doesn't solve your problem I will have to pass on further commenting.

The E34 has a system which unlocks the doors right after you have locked them if there is a malfunction in the system. For example the trunk failed to lock, or one of the doors did not lock.

Lock your doors. Let them unlock. Lock them again, then check to see if any of the doors, trunk, or fuel filler door failed to lock and report back.
