What Causes A Fluke To Happen?

About 10min ago, I get in my car to go to work.
Try to start the car, and it doesn't start. The lights on the dash came on, though.
Tried again -- didn't start. Went in the trunk to check for loose battery connections, and everything was good.

Went back in to start it, and it cranked slowly and started. Got every warning message under the sun. Most went away after 20sec, but two stayed for a good 5 miles...
Tranny problem and 4x4 stability. I drove in limp mode for 5 miles. Shifting into reverse and drive literally felt like I got rear-ended.

Went into the store, came out, and the car fired right up. Also shifted and drove like normal.

My average mpg, mph, and etc. all reset...but my trip did not. So, my battery couldn't have died, could it? Usually when I disconnect the battery (not sure if that's equal to a battery dying), everything but my iDrive stuff resets. And when I disconnect the battery, never have I had a trans problem like that.

I replaced mine last year because I knew it was going out and I was not waiting for it to leave me stranded. Battery's failing always give plenty of advanced warning. You just have to take note of them

If it was your alternator failing it would not start at all. You be left needing a tow truck after the juice went in the battery

What Causes A Fluke To Happen?

I'm going to load test it after work.
Just when I thought I was getting ahead...
Aren't the batteries like $400?

Also, a bad battery will overcharge? I figured overcharging would be an alternator/PCM problem (Calwaterboy's vid).

Correct battery from AutoZone. Was about $75. I think it's gone up. $100 or so now. Search "battery" with my user name for the size.

Has your car been in for the battery connector recall yet. That could certainly be the problem.

I have not been in for the recall.
I bought this car almost exactly a year ago, and this is the first time something like this has happened, though.
I'm guessing that doesn't matter?

What Causes A Fluke To Happen?

Several things...
Where does this plug go?

Two...
Apparently I have to pay BMW to program this new battery to my car? What happens if I don't?
Shouldn't the battery smart sensor learn it through time?

"What Causes A Fluke To Happen?"
By definition, this question cannot be answered. If it could be, it wouldn't be a fluke. And if it were a fluke, there could not be an answer.

From what I have read, the programming tells the car what type of battery you've installed in order to charge it correctly. If you don't, it may not last as it should but some folks have reported they have never done it and have been fine. Something to do with lead acid or gel I think. Maybe someone can elaborate or you can just do a search on 335i batteries.

Just found this:

"Your car should run fine without registering it. But from what I've learned, our cars employ a smart charging scheme tailored for an absorbed glass-mat (AGM) battery. It varies the charging rate according to the age of the battery to keep it optimally charged. If you get a new AGM battery and don't register it, the car may over-charge the new battery and possibly shorten its life. If you end up getting a standard Pb-acid replacement battery, the car may under-charge it.

Take a look at the thread below, it has lots of info and shows you what others have chosen to do.

Get a BMW Indy mechanic to do the registration. Waiting a few days or a couple of weeks shouldn't matter. www.bimrs.org , www.bimmershops.com

Yippi ki yay!

Did you - I hope I hope - benefit from the video?

And if not installed by BMW, at nose bleed cost, was the battery correctly registered? Yup, improper registration can cause a battery to self-destruct.

I did, yes.

Battery was installed correctly, yes. The Bimmer gave its last breath right outside of Napa's parking lot. Fortunately, the car came with tools to change the battery lol.
However, I still can't figure out where that plug goes (picture is in an above post).

I ended up just having it registered. I've heard some people say they never get it registered and all works just fine, but...whatever.

What Causes A Fluke To Happen?

I just took my car in for the battery cable recall. Does anybody know what the procedures are? It doesn't look like they touched anything...

The entire TSB w/ procedure has been posted. Search.
None of the work is visible unless you are upside down under your glovebox with the trim panel removed.

Appreciate that. They DID move stuff I had on the passenger floor, so that makes sense.
