I'm probably an outcast here, but

I bought my 2008 328i because I wanted to have a nice car for once. I didnt buy it to hotrod, race, burn the tires, etc etc. I also specifically wanted an automatic transmission and no turbo.

Now that you are all cringing and gagging, I get to shift transmissions plenty in life. I live on a farm. Tractors, pickups, heck most of the machinery have clutches even if they are hydrostat driven. So, not shifting for once is a luxury for me.

I also do what I want in the car as it is 99 percent only me in it. Yes, I smoke cigars in it. I drink drinks (non alcohol btw) (bottled drinks with a cap) and sometimes eat while on the go on road trips. I bought the car for me, not to keep it nice for someone else down the road. I do keep it clean but like I said I bought it for my enjoyment.

Like I said, I enjoy the car, I just dont make it a shrine. Had it for about 15 months now and put about 3500 miles on it. No problems either, just a recall notice for the battery cable.

Umm I keep mine as clean as I can. Not to keep a good sale price because frankly I bought it cheap and I am sure my son when he learns to drive will run it into the ground.

That being said I clean it inside and out. nothing more depressing than a cluttered car to show to your mates what good taste you have

Welcome Frazzy. Not sure what makes you feel like you'd be an outsider? I doubt many here bought their rides to hot rod, race or do burnouts. Most on the board likely have automatic transmissions & own non-turbos.

Smoke cigars? Yeah, well that might lay outside the box, but hey, I haul my dog to the beach, go fishing, clamming & conduct botanical & ornithological fieldwork using mine. It's our rigs & we can use them as we see fit & enjoy it.

I'm with the OP. We have a BMW that's our fifth German car since 1987 - three Audis, two BMWs over that period. Currently a very nice 2009 328ix coupe with just about every option except folding rear seat.

I don't worship at the shrine of BMW - it's a car, it will get nicks and scratches. I'll keep up with maintenance and do my best to keep it clean, but if it gets waxed once a year I'll be happy. Not going to buy unobtanium wheels, or spend silly money on exhaust. Just driving it, enjoying it, and using it as a commuter and trip car.

And as such, it's a great ride and a pleasure to own. And I must say that the Xdrive is one of the very best AWD systems I have ever driven. This 328 drives fantastic in our Colorado snows.

Welcome Frazzy,

No need to apologize for anything. You bought yourself a fine machine. Enjoy yourself.

You're using your car, not the other way around.

Sounds right by me.

Enjoy your ride and don't worry about anyone else's expectations.

BTW, concerning your preference for automatic transmission, it makes perfect sense. You want to get away from the clutch & shift routine for a little while. Let that left foot take breather. Can't blame you.

For me, it's the same desire, but for the opposite reason: I live in an urban area. Stop and go traffic ain't much fun with a manual tranny. You're riding the clutch down the road at 5 MPH. Ugh.
