Took a test drive..

I'm a proud 2003 325xi owner but seriously considering a newish M3. Well I found one for sale here in the Syracuse area and decided to try it out. It's a 2004 m3 convertible. I wasn't impressed. My 325 i thought, is much smoother. 69k miles asking 20,995. It's at a dealer so I would've traded mine in. My wife even brought the checkbook if I wanted it. Turned out she saw a 2006 X5 but had way too many problems.

Should I keep the 325 for a bit longer? Are there better years for the m3? I'd love one someday. Maybe I just had a bad experience with this particular car, I hope all the m3s aren't like this one.

I wouldn't buy a convertible considering it weighs more than a normal coupe. Was it a manual or SMG?. Your 325 is going to be much easier to maintain and A LOT cheaper that's for sure.

it could be "rough" compared to your 325, and its actually perfectly normal, im not sure. id get a full service history of the car, just to be sure.

in terms of the years, the M3 never got a "facelift" like the non M Coupes, so they all pretty much look the same, in 2004 on the m3 came the new LED taillights, and some other small things here and there.. 2005 had minor changes from 2004, so in short, yes, its a fine year..

the 06 E46 M3 is completely different when it comes to engine/mechanical parts though. Everything is in a different location and harder to work on. So if he does go with a E46 M3 it's best to get one that isn't an 06.

Really? I'll have to read up on that, i didn't know that. My guess would be they were trying to change the engine for the new generation?

And agreed, OP i would stay away from an 06

I'd say, in the end, its about what you feel, and what you want in the car. If you like your current car and you weren't impressed, best to let off the trigger for now and save up for something you'd appreciate over what you have. You also have AWD, and live in NY. You're getting all kinsa winter weather year-round, take that into account. just my 2c
