Running on empty

On the way home from the office today I decided to see how far I could go with 0 miles on the tank. (Yes, a stupid curiosity.) Technically speaking the display read "--" not "0". Regardless, I made it about 1.5 miles on empty before pulling into the gas station. When I filled the tank, the pump said I put 17.26 gallons in. A few questions...

1 - Does anyone know how much fuel sits in reserve when the display reads "-- until empty"?
2 - What is the actual tank capacity on the F10?
3 - I'm also curious to hear how far any of you have gone on empty.

Have no clue on the reserve amount, I've always wondered this so thanks for being the test case! I've only let it get down to 2 miles before pulling into the gas station. The official capacity is 18.5, so maybe it keeps a gallon in reserve?

You probably could have gone another 20 miles, try that on this full tank

In name of research, check the response time of BMW roadside for the gallon of gas.

Yeah, I was curious about that. Also, what else happens mechanically when you run out of gas at 80mph? Does the transmission disengage and put you in neutral? Are there any other automated features that kick in, like hazard lights?

Also, I know a few of you want me to stress my car to find out the answers to these questions...I'm an owner, not a leaser, so I'll apologize in advance for disappointing you by ending my "research". Regardless, I'd still like to know from anyone who has experienced this...presumably by accident.

With 10 mpg's on average, wish they'd put larger tanks in these things!

I agree. I think tank size too small specially in V8. I'm filling gas every 4th day almost.

I have driven close to 20 city miles after that mark.. and still the tank takes only~18 gallons to fill. So I guess there is more than a gallon after that mark.

My '94 Mercedes S500 has a 27 gallon tank and can go for weeks (better than 10 mpg's too)!

I ran my 550 to zero and beyond several times, including one 406 mile tank at 17.5 gallons. I would estimate the reserve is 1.5 gallons.

Is it safe to do so? I wonder tank bottom has particle build up that would enter the engine or some filter in large amount and could cause some failure. These get diluted when the gas tank is filled.

The owner's manual is quite explicit about not allowing the fuel to get too low or damage may occur. I think the injectors might be damaged it they were run without fuel.

A very long time ago in the dark ages I ran out of gas (not a BMW). The damage was severe. The car was only a year old but I had to have all the injectors replaced and the gas lines flushed.
The tank size (as noted above) is "approximately 18.5 gal/70L" from the manual. You don't want to find out what happens next.

Dealer returned my car to me with an empty tank once. They pulled it up to the curb, turned it off, handed me the key, I got in, but couldn't start it; tried twice not realizing it didn't have gas. Told my service advisor, tech came out, said it had an empty tank and brought gas to put some in it. Wasn't great.

its funny how @ 50 miles left ,,, the car starts to bark at you...

anyway.. who ever has the extra time should run the tank out, get the info, and share it..
then call bmw assist and say something is wrong

you're brave German Roots, LOL, for going low on a 550--this car is thirsty.

I personally if traveling don't like going below 1/3rd a tank. Around town I'll go 1/4 tank. Winter, I don't go below 1/4 tank. I don't do a lot of long road trips, but often 150 mile round trips. In my area with weather that can rapidly change, road construction, or accidents (this mainly goes for interstate travel) I like to have a full tank.

Re: Running on empty

You are planning on replacing your fuel filter now, right?

Personally, I'd never risk doing this. I'd be worried the "--" was stored in the OBD and BMW would use that as an excuse to deny a warranty claim.
