Update #2: Brought my Car to Verizon and tried a 2nd S4 and it did the same thing (Android version 4.2.2) the S4 would not stay connected to iDrive nor transfer phone book, spinning circle. Then I went to the BMW dealer and tried a used 2012 535 with the same iDrive and software version as my car, with my phone, and it behaved exactly the same. I would say there is an incompatibility between the VZW S4 ver 4.2.2 and BMW 5 series 2012 running tx-003.004.031-003.004. I tried upgrading my iDrive to tx-003.005.006 (upd01006.bin) but it behaved the same way. I contacted BMW USA Customer Service and they are investigating it. They said the web sight might be wrong for verizon. I would tend to agree with them. I will let you know what they tell me. My deal er is useless, they dont even understand the issue. BTW. This phone worked perfectly in a new 2013 535 with the next generation iDrive, incase anybody had thought i was crazy. It paired in under 30 seconds, transferred all 2200 contacts in to phone book, streamed media, message apps worked with Office app in iDrive, the whole deal. BWM can make it work, will they port it back to my 2012 535 iDrive?

I have no explanation why your S4 doesnt work. I have a 2012 750i, my S4 is with Verizon. I have the upd01005.bin installed, and everything works fine. I do have a lot less contacts than you do. Did you try to erase all of your contacts?

Yes, I erased all the contacts. Does the 750 use the same iDrive as 535? Can you get me your tx version? Thx.

I currently have iPhone 5 on Verizon, and planning to get the S4, and also working on getting a 2013 535i. One of the things I worried about was whether S4 will work with the iDrive. So there's no problem with the S4 and 2013 535i iDrive? Did you test with the 2013 on the lot?

Yes, it's the same I drive version. I don't have the tx version of the top of my head.

It may be a problem with iDrive rather than the phone.

The Verizon-branded Samsung S4 is listed as compatible with your car:
http://www.bmwusa.com/bluetooth

I have a lot of cell phones and one of my favorites is a Nokia E71 which I use from time to time.
It's impossible to keep the phone and the car connected and I have the same problem you do.

If you haven't already, next move should be to make sure you are running the latest Bluetooth software avail:
http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/nav...gion=&country=

It would seem the HTC ONE delivers.

Called ID picture, emails, SMS etc. all work as they should with the iDrive.

Can't wait to see what Apple will do with iOS 7 during their on June 10 for WWDC 2013!

I am running the latest BMW bluetooth update. And technically the phone is NOT supported according to my service guy. The BMW web site states S4 on Verizon was tested with android 4.2.1. Which seems impossible as the phone shipped from Verizon, at launch with 4.2.2. And yes 4.2.2 does have some bluetooth changes in it. Called BMW Customer Service and they confirmed.

Too bad. The S4 is a nice phone.

Have you tried using other phones with the car? Same or no problem?

Lightbulb

Update 3 - Final conclusion: went to AT&T and tried their Samsung S4 with android 4.2.2 and it worked flawlessly, with update 5 in the iDrive, as others have stated. Went back to Verizon Wireless and told the manager, he broke out a new phone and it go figure it worked just fine. Aperiently the phone they gave me had a problem with the BT radio. Now my phone works with my iDrive, all my contacts, office txt msgs and streaming audio. What a crazy couple of days only to find out my phone was a lemon.

Does anybody have the Verison version of the phone working with theiriDrive?
This was happening to my 2011 e90 M3 and my new Galaxy S4. Well today I tried a "gimick" I read last night. Pair the phone and after putting in your pass code, restart your phone. It worked! stayed connected through a hour of music and two phone calls. I cant get contacts messages etc. but it stayed connected! Calls and music is fine for now!

Seems that most people with the S4 are getting SMS on iDrive? I'm not currently, but here's the weird thing: the day I bought the car I paired my S4 and was able to see all my text messages. Later, when I had time to play with it they were gone. Incoming text messages do not display, either. I tried repairing the phone, but no dice. I installed the UPD01006 update, and there was no apparent change.

I can make and receive calls via Bluetooth, and I can get streaming music to work, but I can't get SMS to work to save my life. BMW's website says that SMS works on the Sprint S4 with my 640i, and it appears to be working for most people. Does anyone have suggestions?

Works for me with my S4.

I distinctly remember that when I first paired the device, it asked me permissions to access my messages and such that I had to accept.

Yes, I got that when I first paired the phone, and hit accept, and got the messages. But then it never worked afterward.

I discovered the problem. I had been playing with phone and bluetooth settings, but somehow the Office setting did not have messages enabled. I have no idea how that got changed since it was working at one point, but once I checked the "messages" box under Office it started working again. I feel kind of stupid now, but I wasn't expecting to have to change any settings since it had worked originally.

Anyway, thanks for the response.

Does the Internet tethering work?

How can you SEND Texts back to people? I'm using an S3 right now and can read texts, but can't send them. There's a bar that says "Reply" and "Voice Reply" but when I try and do it, it just doesn't allow it basically.

You need to have the BMW online/convenience plan subscription in order to unlock those option + the dragon dictation. Its $199/Year plan

Just picked up a Samsung Galaxy S4 and thought I was off to the races without any problems. SMS appeared, streaming audio worked fine and files stored on the phone played without any issues as well. Even noticed that the BMW picks up the artist and track name from Pandora. Cool!

Later that day while on a longer drive I noticed what sounded like skipping of the audio coming from Pandora. At first, I thought it was a bad data connection. However, noticed the same problem with TuneIn and the default music player with a file from the device. Timing of the "skipping" is sporadic. Usually it happens after the first song or two. This has got to be a bluetooth connection with the car. I've not been able to test it with a phone call since I haven't been on a call for long enough. I've deleted and repaired the phone (including rebooting) a few times to no avail.

Another thing that's really frustrating is the S4 won't automatically connect to the BMW. It pairs only but I have to go into the connections menu on the iDrive and manually connect it to the phone. Have tried a few apps from Google Play that are supposed to auto connect. Does nothing for the S4.

Grrrr... very frustrating.

My service manager showed me an internal email from BMW NA telling their service managers that the bluetooth connections with cell phones could cause the iDrive and navigation to crash and reset. They did not mention any specific brands but it was obvious that any brands that are not supported by BMW system are to blame!
The same email also pointed out that the sattelite radio could also interfere with the iDrive as well.

SO I have a 2013 528xi built in May of 2013. I have an S4 that connects to the car with the avialable functions. Whenever I am streaming music through the bluetooth, it would play for 2 to 10 minutes then cuts off like it is trying to reconnect. It is odd and it seems it is like when the phone heats up??? I have my work email on the phone and tons of contacts, not sure if this is the problem. I tried my wife's I phone 4 with no issues. This sucks! I called BMW and called Verizon and no one has a clue. The worst is that I cannot easily reproduce the problem to show someone!!

I went onto Samsung's website and chatted with a tech agent. They had me go into my settings and clear the bluetooth cache- She promised this will work. I am using the car later on today and will see... I really hope this works !!!

I talked w/ Samsung yesterday who were pretty much useless. Same thing w/ Verizon. Took the car to BMW today to have them run complete diagnostics on the car software. Also had them submit a Puma case to BMW so this gets logged into the system.
