How to deal with a Dealer??

I'm buying my buddy's 2010 328i coming off lease. We're having the dealer act as a conduit in the transaction to avoid double taxation.

Anyway, the dealer originally told my buddy that my total cost would be the lease buyout price + $500 for the dealer to handle the transaction + tax.

However, the dealer has since learned that the car has VERY low mileage and is worth far more than the lease buyout price.

I am VERY worried that the dealer will try to raise the price on me once my friend signs the vehicle back over to BMW. Is there any way to protect myself from this?

Optimally, I'd want to lock down the price BEFORE my friend turns in the leased 328i. However, would this even be possible since at that point, the dealer will not have possession of the vehicle?

If anyone has advice on how to handle, please help! Thanks!

The vehicle belongs to BMWFS. Have your friend check with them to see if it's possible for you to buy the car directly from them at the end of the lease without ever turning it in to a dealer.

Thanks. I'll try. But I thought I'd read that the dealer must handle the transaction. The dealer made a few remarks recently to the effect that "we're going to negotiate" when in fact, there is nothing to negotiate.

Have yor friend call BMWFS, since you wont be able to access his account, and have him explain that you want to buy it out. He, then, can grant you permission to access his account and see what the process is. As long as FS gets paid, they dont care. However, the dealership will see $$$$$$$ on a nice car.

Yeah, I may need to do this. I was really hoping to make this as painless as possible for my friend, since he's doing me a favor. But you're right, when a dealer sees $$$, all promises go out the window.

I do have in writing, the price he originally quoted, which was simply lease buyback + $500. Perhaps this isn't legally binding, but it sure sounds like an offer to me, which I intend to accept.

Once you walk into a dealership, you are in their playground, and they make all the rules. There must be a better way
