Thumbs up best sub $500 performance mods?

Hey Guys,

I very recently have had the pleasure in owning a BMW. It's an e90 325i I got a sweet deal on. I want to improve engine performance. What are the most cost effective sub $500 mods that make the driving machine even more "ultimate." Members of the site have suggested an active autowerke tune, 3 stage intake manifold (want it but exceeds my budget), and aftermarket cold air intake (conflicting opinions on performance). Any more to add to the list.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Didn't you just ask what you would add to the at in a different thread (same forum and everything)? Why start a new one if people already pitched in over there?

Overall, it's a 325, go with cosmetics. Performance won't change much unless you do major changes. The three stage intake will make some difference. But BMW designed the 325 and 330i with more than that difference in mind.

$500? You're in the wrong market. Stick to Honda if you think 500 is going to make a difference.

Stiffer springs. $500 will cover a set and install and the car will handle better.

Performance mods for $500? Basically none. But you could get some cool metal sport pedals, jacket and a hat!

You won't be able to do much to upgrade the car for that amount of money. But it's more than enough to get some time at an autocross or a track day so that you can upgrade the driver.

Advantages of a Driver Upgrade:
  • Will not void your warranty.
  • Will not depreciate.
  • No permanent modifications are made to the vehicle.
  • No tools needed.
  • No additional weight.
  • Works on any car you drive.
  • Can be installed in a single day.
  • Extremely fun to install.
  • Additional installations can be performed for added performance.

Stretch the budget to $800ish and find a pre-owned BMW Performance Exhaust! Double blind control testing confirms that throttle delay has decreased over 63%!

Learning how to drive at a BMW HPDE, better tires or break pads. Don't waste your money on anything else.
