Navi night mode question

My navi does not go into night mode after dark. The system continues to display daytime features. I looked everywhere in the manual for this setting and have been unable to find it. This has always been automatic in my other cars but I noticed others have had the same issue. I have a 2008 335i

I don't think it has a night mode. I've never noticed one. Early on, I set the screen brightness to something that was good both day and night, and mapped one of the steering wheel buttons to turn the screen off. That's worked well for me.

That's what I figured. I'm used to seeing the navi switch to night mode at night. It did in my Infiniti M35. I can't believe there's no night setting in a $50,000 car's navi system! Im taking down to my local BMW dealer and see what they can do. It may jut be a matter of updating the CD.

There was no night mode until the new Idrive in 09 abd even then it is not automatic. I have it set on one of my memory buttons if I want to use it.

Thanks for the response David. Indeed, no inverse night mode but dimming the map helped. I wonder if I got an updated CD would that help. Probably not. Other than that, the car is a very sweet ride, especially top down. I got the 2008 with only 19,300 miles on it. I couldn't pass it up even though technology might not be up to snuff. The I Drive is not that complicated and the voice recognition works well once you know what the prompts are.

Nope, new CD won't help.

A crime against mankind, you're a year early and to my knowledge BMW does not have and has not had automatic night mode [high contrast colors].

Whew! I programmed a radio button to toggle, PITA but as automatic as it gets.

Dang Germans.

Mine has a night mode, but I can't believe it's not automatic. Turning the headlights on should trigger the night mode, but no, that would make way too much sense. I've been going through the menus to do it. Lots of clicks. How do I program my steering wheel buttons? Although not a perfect solution, it's much better than what I'm doing now.

FYI, on later models if you have "Traffic Conditions/Grey Map" enabled then Night Mode will not work as it overrides the Night Mode setting.

Our solution was to turn Night Mode on, then program a button to turn "Traffic Conditions/Grey Map" off which then enables the Night Mode.

As others have stated, I can't believe that Traffic Mode can't be enabled automatically tied to whether the headlights are on/off and specifically tied to the light sensor that turns the headlights on/off automatically based on ambient light.

Our Lexus has night mode, find it annoying... Quite happy without night mode myself... Bask in the glow of the Cathode Rays!

There is an auto nought mode on every nav I owned. Pushing a preset is no big deal, but this is some dumbass programming.

Thanks for the feedback. Dimming the brightness helps but not the same as night mode. Other than that, this car kicks ass! I have a 2008 335 black with brown "saddle bag" leather with all of the packages. The dealer didn't even know it was a CPO so I have until June 2014 under the CPO warranty although I purchased the extended. The BMW dealer checked it out said all fuel pumps were replaced in 2011 and they just took care of the battery cable. The car had 19,000 miles. I love cruising with the top down with the ray ban shades. I need to figure out how to load my golf clubs!

Never thought about programming a memory button for it. Do you have to program one for day mode also or does it toggle?

I agree that should absolutely be automatic when the head lights come on.

Toggles.

Hey, I've noticed a 3 generally demands to be driven rather than ridden. Even the Step's best in manual mode.

Although, swivelin' lamps are totally automatic, and much appreciated. Mystery: Why the complex, fiendishly engineered, very expensive-to-fix motorized assy when an array of static, angled LED's can do the job?
