Yes you can. Its not the wrong or right way but the cheapest and easier route to take would be to cut the connectors off and connect ground with ground and hot with hot. But I would suggest taking it to a local stereo shop first before you cut anything just for the simple reason I cant see 100% of what your doing.

I hope this helps in some way.

Hopefully the bulbs are the same. If not, you may have to buy another pair of headlights. Because I THINK Xenon are different sizes then HID. But dont take my word for it. Like I said have them check it out.

You can't just cut and plug. You're going to get a fault code because your lighting control module thinks you have halogens and the stock xenons will make it think there is a bulb out. It's more than just the lights. Aftermarket xenons have resistor packs that trick the LCM into thinking things are okay.

Xenon= the gas inside the bulb

HID= high intensity discharge

HID is the general name given to all lights that use a ballast and run on gas on the inside of the bulb. Xenon is a specific type of gas used inside the bulb.

As elvis stated, you need the ballasts to make the lights work.

Here is a link to BMW instructions for retrofitting Xenon/HID headlights c/w automatic level control
http://www.gavandkel.co.uk/PDFs/276en.pdf
It cautions that details may vary depending on the specific car. But the guide will at least give you an idea of what is involved. The instruction notes that headlight washers must be retrofitted if not already installed. This requirement is a European standard, not required in North America.

A related link with E39 retrofit guides for a wide range of options/features.
