We are the Borg. Resistance is futile.

Inquiring minds want to know: Why would you invest in a heads up display when Google Glass can put custom config'd data in your eyeball? From all your vehicles?

Remember, replacement cost of a 3's heads-up-display windshield alone exceeds list cost o'Goggle glasses by $500....never mind original system price.

Think OBDII Bluetooth comm + GPS + Internet Access

I say Borg-wear is the near future of geek-kind. Is there a demand? iDrive rendered Zombie? What say you?

I see you are wearing the beta release in your avatar. Clunky, but I guess the technology was sound.

Much earlier, it was the R&D pre-pre-pre-Alpha. X-Rays were an issue.

You actually own a pair?
The question of why use Google glasses as opposed to heads up is the same question as why use Phone GPS as opposed to built-in Nav.
Advantages of built in
Integrated and guaranteed to work (unless it breaks, like anything)
Fewer items to carry / remember / charge

Disadvantage of built in
Typically more expensive
Limited functionality and limited upgrade ability
It being fixed in your car means you can't use it outside your car (e.g., you leave your car to walk around and now don't have a GPS, which may help in an unknown area)

I've not used Google Glass, but I have worn other HUD eyewear and at least in my experience over several days it remained pretty distracting. As someone in my late forties it was information overload and I became a bumbling idiot even while walking. But I'm the kind of person who has trouble navigating, holding a thoughtful conversation, and driving simultaneously. I would expect (hope, actually) that legislation would catch up and prohibit use of GG and other HUD eyewear while driving. Attention to the task of driving, reaction time, and the ability to process multiple streams of data relevant to driving are all severely compromised. I'd go so far as to require a bluetooth profile which sends an enable/disable distractions trigger to Bluetooth devices so that a responsible driver could elect to block distractions at source while the car is in motion.

HUD technology for the car as a whole is somewhat different as it will tend to be pertinent information such as IR forward looking cameras, car status and warnings, and perhaps unobtrusively navigation and brief entertainment selection options. OEM vehicle HUD would never be a stream of texts and emails, entertainment videos, etc.

I expect there will be a lot of huffing and puffing in the press and popular opinion about balancing personal freedoms to do whatever the hell one wants vs. public safety. Personally, I'm in favor of protecting all our families by curbing the idiots who'll feel it is OK to watch porn movies while driving.

Frank.

We are the Borg. Resistance is futile.

Personally I don't want anything coming into my field of view when I'm looking out the windshield... Let alone do I want to be on the road with people who have tweets, texts, and Facebook updates luring their attention away from that unimposing 4,000 lb car they're about to hit.

Slim chance....remember who Google is....they've partnered with government, deeply, which should concern everybody, but Apple has too.

No ban. Where's Apple?

If the iGoogle Twin Power Turbo is driving itself, I wouldn't mind watching me some classic Ron Jeremy and Ginger Lynn while on the road.

Sadly, no - was very young when that was around....

The advantage of Google Glass is that it can be worn at all times - maybe you'll want to. Thus, built-in becomes a disadvantage.

As General Patten said, "Fixed fortifications are monuments to man's stupidity." On available mobility, very true.

Apple's in real danger here - next thing y'know Google Glass's camera will read your hands AI style. iPhone as slide rule. Forget Samsung. Forget laptops. Forget desktops. Two screens? Shucks....entire field of vision....slam dunk....

Yup - Google would probably suggest that there is no problem because if you use Google Drive (the re-designated use of that name which refers to self-driving vehicles, not the cloud storage) then you are not distracted from the more important task of Social Networking and ad-revenue generating commerce by driving.

I say Google Glass will be doomed by the same social force that relegated the Segway to niche service in National Parks, Disney World and so on: The self-imposed limit on the degree to which one is willing to look like a dork.

Aha! 1st gen does look...dorky. But need be no more unfashionable than sunglasses, or eye glasses, or maybe design more futuristic. Eventually implanted, of course, powered by body heat.

I say untapped demand is unprecedented, if they can pull of the computing power to make it very fast. Freedom from hardware and ability to have everything we now do and much more anywhere, anytime....gimongous. Yo! It's all about you, a proven seller.

Segway? A product looking for a place to snooze. Little real utility or appeal. Hard to see how it got as far as it has.

It is already illegal to use this device while driving in California.

WHAT! Who dares write that legislation? And Google, right here in the Bay Area?

Wait....it is illegal to drive and text here too. We're not allowed to hold a cell phone to our ear either. Nope....no way....and absolutely nobody does it today.....

I can see the benefits, but there needs to be some limits placed on what you can do with these when you are in a car, similar to what you can do with a phone + built-in nav.
There are projects to mirror your phone display to an in-car display but these typically will re-configure to a driving centric display and limited operations when connected to head unit.

Perfect. Next time I see someone in the car next to me looking like they are having an acute Tourette's attack I'll know they are rebooting their Google Glass. Seems like a perfectly viable alternative to iDrive and HUD.

I view this is an advertising plug for how google is pushing boundaries and think They are smart enough to know that in its current state the device will be niche at best. But it's just goofy enough to garner attention (SNL skits included). Once the laughter dies down, they release the part of the technology that has real purpose. Compared to the "original google glass" (you remember...that really goofy design!), the new google glass 2.0 is waaaay better.

What about people who want to wear sunglasses??
