X1 N20 exhaust tip surprise

Obviously, I don't know everything there is to know about BMWs. Leaning down behind my new X1 this morning to pick up the newspaper, I glanced up to see the below. OK, I did a search and learned something, but for those who were previously unaware, I present this for your entertainment.

Wow never looked down there. Didn't know there was a valve either.

I 've had four other bimmers. I'm pretty sure I would have noticed if any of the others had a visible valve like that. My X3 35i does not have a visible valve. I wonder if there's one hidden somewhere?

Virtually all BMWs for the last 15 years (going back to E46 or earlier) have had a flapper valve. It's to keep a little more back pressure in the exhaust system to allow faster warmup of the system to allow the catalyst to light-off as early as possible. My son's '07 335i has one. My '01 330xi had one.

Search for "golf tee mod". Be aware, however, that recent ECU/Emissions systems need to be coded to let you bypass it.
