Mein Auto: I wish it was a Bimmer
What options can you not live without?

I'm contemplating ordering a new X1, and my trying to pin down what options I want. I'm trying to keep the price down a bit so my payments are reasonable.

I'm wondering which options you would consider a must-have. I've played around on Edmunds and Truecar to see what the numbers are. The best setup for what I like is:

28i Xdrive
Mineral Grey
Sport Package
Black leatherette
Heated seats
Panoramic sunroof

I'm actually not that interested in the iDrive with Nav. I worry it would be a distraction, plus I have an iPad mini that is data enabled. I was going to get a Proclip mount and put it on the dash to use as the navigation.

I did a test drive over the weekend, and I'm fine with the stock steering. I can live without comfort access or streaming Bluetooth. I wanted leatherette because it sounds like it's a bit more durable than the leather.

I definitely want the sport seats with power adjust. I'm on the fence about heated seats. It doesn't get super cold in Tennessee for very long, but it would be nice for a quick warm up.

So, what else would you add?

Mein Auto: 2006 BMW X3 3.0i (manual)
Based on my last 2 BMWs and 1 Mini, here's the list:

1) Manual transmission
2) Xenon headlights
3) Parking sensors
4) Sport suspension / seats
5) HK stereo
6) Panoramic sunroof

Everything else is negotiable...

I'd want the tech package as the iDrive system lets you control a lot of functions, heated seats, leather and paddle shifters. I thought about the Sport Package but it's basically only the seats and trim, no suspension mods. You need MSport to get the sportier suspension and now you are looking at $3K.

I originally ordered my car without the tech package but decided the next day to add it on. It's so much more than just navigation these days - they've built some really neat technologies.

For me, I love the moonroof, heated seats are an absolute must living in upstate new york as well.

In order of preference...
Sunroof
Adaptive headlights
Heated steering wheel (I opted for this over the sport package since they conflict)
Heated seats
300hp
Paddle shifters

The must haves for me are:

-Sport Seats
-Xenon headlamps
-Moonroof
-Tech Package

If I had more $ I would have gotten the premium package but my build got too pricey too quickly..

Make sure you request power sport seats ... The sport seats are manual unless you do single add on option

My build below,
I really love ALL my options!, and can't live without any of them. The power seats are not a must if you are the primary/only driver, probably not such a big deal.
But my wife drives it too, so had to have it.

I didn't get the premium package since I didn't want the sunroof. And couldn't get the comfort/executive packages as those required the premium package. So lost out on some nice features. For example, its weird having a car built in this day and age without a car alarm.

One option too that I think it was worth the price, is the engine upgrade to the 35i.
Only a $3000(CAD) upgrade and for that price, not bad at all.

Looking at your build....... awesome!

For me it was the
  • Msport
  • Xenon Lights
  • Heated Seats
  • HK sound

I actually let myself get talked into the panoramic roof even though I was against it (didn't want leaks, chances of cracks, etc).
Now I have to say the Panoramic is one of my favorite features on the vehicle.

What options can you not live without?

How did you get the HK sound package without the tech package? Every time I add it, it wants to add the navigation.

Another setup I like is this

28i Xdrive
M Sport package
Le Mans Blue
Black leatherette
Power seats
Heated seats

Puts the price at invoice of $35,985. MSRP of 38,840. Truecar puts it at $36,648. Which is just the price point I wanted. I want the driving experience first, then a few comforts. But no distractions

If we were to buy the car again, I would go with 2 options:
Ultimate Package
HK audio

Reasons being:
- leather seat is not particularly more comfortable- but it is cooler. The fake leather absorb lots of heat in warm weather
- power seat really is a must in this car. I have never seen manual adjusters as badly designed as BMW's. The nonpower, non-sports seat doesn't even have a tilt adjustment
- HID headlights come with cute angel eyes running light. But living in a well lit urban area I have no real need for brighter lights.
- in the old days I would go for an aftermarket NAV/audio, but nowadays everything is so integrated into the IDrive system you might as well get everything from the factory.
- sports seats are excellent, but probably not $1900 excellent.
- HK audio is expensive, but that is one option you could actually enjoy every moment you are in the car.
- the m-sport package looks great because of the mono-tone treatment. But if I were to do it all over again, I would buy a no-line in black, and then have the silver pieces in the front and rear bumpers painted black myself. That would be the cheap way to get a mono-tone X1.

I agree with a lot of what's been said...

#1) Xenon
#2) Sport seats (can't say whether lumbar is essential -- I have it, but I don't know what not having it is like)
#3) sun roof
#4) parking sensors (I like having the front, in addition to the rear)
#5) power seats, if there's more than one driver
#6) HK sound (I don't have it, but I'm starting to really wish I did)
#7) backup camera

Non-essential options are: leather seats, X-line, comfort access (I have them & like them all, but could live without them).

I'm on the fence about iDrive (which I have). The navigation is annoying and really makes me wish I had the dash compartment instead, so I could mount my Garmin. But the screen is really useful for the backup camera, parking sensor display, and controlling the audio/bluetooth.

Leather
Xenon Lights
HK Sound

I love the MSport package body moulding and 18" wheels.
I cannot live without the paddle shifters, moonroof, HK sound, and adaptive xenon lights. Sometime I just look at the "eyes" reflecting off the car in front of me and it just makes me smile.

This is quite the ironic thread for me, as I was just thinking about some of the "premium" features that are standard that I wish I could've opted out of: I'd rather have cloth seats than p\leather, and I'd rather have manual climate control than automatic. I bet many feel the same about the transmission, but I won't go there since the 8HP seems quite competent.

Anyway, I ordered an almost base model with the only options being servotronic and the lighting package, so I guess I don't have a whole lot of must have extras.

In winter: Heated steering wheel, Panoramic sunroof - brighten the interior on rainy days (99% of the time here), minimize depression
In summer: tinted windows may be?

I am just thankful for driving a BMW, everything is a nice to have, including the car itself
