How often do you add oil to your F30?

Sorry if a similar thread was posted before, couldn't find anything.

Before I ask more questions related to this, I was on the way from Chicago to Philly last night. To my surprise about 200 miles outside Philadelphia my car asked for oil. ODO was at almost exactly 5000. Pulled over to the nearest gas station and added a quart. I come from times when if a new engine was eating oil it was a sign of something going terribly wrong. This morning a CA at Princeton BMW assured me this is completely normal for BMW turbo engines and that I am supposed to always have a quart of oil with me when driving the car. He said the V8s are even worse because sometimes you have to add oil every 1000 miles. How is it with yours? The manual mentions this may occur but says nothing about how often or at what stage of the engine life.

My E90 335i never needs oil between my 7500 mile oil change interval. I'm sure if I did 15K intervals it might.

Older engines start to burn oil. But with a brand new engine, I find it hard to believe that you would constantly need to add oil, unless there's something wrong. A brand new engine shouldn't be burning that much oil.

A long run like the OP was on is when you will notice the oil being down. The OP got the engine warm enough for long enough to burn off gas/water contaminants. Remember, the reason TBN exists is as a measure of contaminant-removal left. As oil is burned up, blow-by contaminants add to the volume and one often believes no oil has been burned; heating things up well (not the case in daily short-distance commuting) tricks people.

In the old days, you would have changed the oil at 3K miles, removing the contaminants. Also, in the bad old days, you probably wouldn't (if you were the majority driver) that wouldn't have checked the oil level with the dipstick to even know you were down a bit.

All engines use oil. 1/2 quart in 5K miles? Pish.

What, I'm going to have to use the dip stick to check the oil level on my 328i? It's not electronic?

What's oil?

I just wait till a little light comes on the dash and I bring my car to the dealer. Whatever they do there doesn't matter to me, I just eat the free yogurt and hot cookies, check out the X5 milfs.

At about 14000 miles mine needed a quart, so the BMW dealer added a quart for free. I brought it in a month later for the service.

Normal.

Have seen dozens and dozens of threads over the years, just like this. Add a quart between 5 and 10k and move on.

Has happened like this on three of my bimmers.

LMAO! This is EXACTLY what I was thinking, or, well "WTF would I carry a quart of oil with me for when I can go to any BMW dealer and ask them to "fix the blinky light", while eating hot cookies? Didnt even think about the milfs but maybe another bonus? haha

I guess the only reason would be for longer trips when you don't want to spend additional time looking for a BMW dealer if you get surprised by your car asking for oil - just like it happened to me

Actually, all kidding aside, thanks for posting the information. I would have probably been surprised, as this is the first car I have owned that has a oil sensor. I normally got my oil changed every 6-7k miles (not 3) in my other cars so it would have surprised me.

How far of a drive is that you were doing? I am planning on going from San Diego to San Francisco in the next couple of months, which is about 500 miles or so. Think I need to take some oil with me?

On my return trip from SD to NV, I got the add 1 quart of oil at 6300 miles. I was about 20 miles from the dealer and they told me to take it in so I drove it slow. They told me it was normal to add a quart about 6000-7000 miles and they add a quart to a lot of BMWs. I now keep a spare quart of 5W-30 in my trunk just in case I'm too far from a dealer.

My trip was about 760 miles one way, came to over 1600 total. If I were you I'd take it just in case - what if your car does need it and you are somewhere in the middle of Big Sur? this way you're just saving yourself some headaches. BTW - I did that drive just a few months ago. It's so nice makes you want to just move to Cali right away!

You are incorrect.

If you're not going to follow the recommended interval, how do you come up with 3,000 or 4,000? Why not 100? Or every other day?
